It all started with SRK (at his peak) doing PR for Hyundai. Worked fabulously for them because Hyundai brand was a complete stranger to Indians.

Of course, just like Hindi movies, once a winning formula is found, everyone else tries to copy it and apply it for everything else without bothering to analyse the actual cause and effects.

The main job of a brand ambassador is to bring awareness to the product so that people will consider it during purchase. After that, it is up to the competence of the product to sell.

AB and AB junior certainly made the public aware of the Versa, but people looked at it and didnt like it for whatever reason.

For example, many people I know who are looking to buy a car have'nt never heard of cars like Cedia, Superb, Aveo etc. Cars like these could use a strong brand ambassador.

I would. I've always wanted to own a Sunny Deol vest. Hopefully used.

I'd also like to wear a Sunil Shetty jock strap. Preferably on my head.

Yes, TVS is actually riding a high in Jharkhand due to Dhoni endorsing their bikes. Read it in the papers.

Celibrity fatigue has not set in India, but will come soon, like in the US. Companies across US are using the man on the street for adverts(for example cell phone companies) instead of celebrities whose contracts are expiring now and not being renewed.
Expect to see this happening here too.

What 'Brand ambassadors' do? They create awareness.

The idea is to get more people know about the product. Fast way is to get a celebrity and immediately the product gets noticed. I guess its dependent on ad budget. If the budget is more, they will rope in a celebrity. Otherwise, it does take time for the product to register in people's mind.

Celebrities do create a buzz initially, but all depends on the product to carry it forward.

PS: I don't think spending less on celebrities would make any impact on the company's revenue. Anyway they will exhaust the ad budget. Money spent on ad is a small percentage of the revenue. Btw, if they stop advertising, then there would be significant drop in revenue.

Reportedly, Maruti paid Bachanans 4 crores for the Versa ad. Thats approximately the cost of 100 Versas i.e., a months sale of Versas. I guess Maruti would have made that amount in couple of months and for the brand awareness Bachanans created for Versa, the amount is worth it.

I feel it works to some extent among general public. Many people unknowingly build some image/impression about each car and place it above or below other cars based on 'nothing', I mean this is just a feeling people(who are not specifically interested in automobiles) devleop in their mind. According to me celebrities inflence this impression creation
