That bridge existed BEFORE the toll was imposed. There was no toll on that bridge till L&T built the byepass and everyone byepassed the byepass to byepass the toll that they collected on that new road.

So the government gave them rights to collect a toll on entry to Coimbatore - I dont think it has anything to do with that little culvert at all. This is probably another way of subsidising L&T for people that want to avoid their miserable toll.

This is a typically frustrating case of exploitation via monopoly. Just because there is no other option, the toll collectors felt it fit to fleece with arrogance.

I would have hoped that the rates were decided in a citizen-centric way before the contract was awarded. But then the so called leaders have their own vested interests, who else but the common man to pay the price?

I like what the State achieved with the Bombay-Pune expressway. It is NOT the only option. For lonavla, they charge about 70 rupees but give you value of a LOT more than that vis-a-vis the old highway, in terms of fuel savings, time and safety. If you want to save on toll, you can use the old highway.

i guess you are talking about the small bridge (sorry culvert) that is on the way to palakkad with well maintained grass lawns... if i am right i remember paying toll around 98-99 itself and also used to wonder why they are collecting heavy for such a small bridge.

secondly, we have never used the irumbuliyur bypass, but i still remember paying toll.. so i feel that toll was collected for the bridge and not for the entire bypass as previously stated.

again look at the state of flyovers, mankhurd one, chembur one, mankhurd ghatkopar link road, all filled with potholes. thank god they have done away with the speed breakers atleast.

i think some body should approach the court to rule against levying such hig toll charges. i wouldnt say that they should not collect any toll becoz funds are needed for a debt ridden state like us but then how much money actually reaches the state coffers.
