Tribute to "The Wall" - Rahul Dravid, announces retirement from Tests.

The legend - "The Wall", is likely to announce his retirement today. Test Crkt fans will surely miss a class act.

Though this announcement was likely, the timing did surprise me a little.

Source: Times of India

PS: I cannot write much (doing it hastily) as posting from my office desktop due to which I cannot completely spell the sport he played.

Note to the mods: Me thinks this legend deserves a standalone thread. Please merge with existing ones if deemed appropriate.

An end of an era. A man who was admired by all teams. And we were lucky to have seen him play through out his career.

If only Rahul Dravid was not born in the same era as Sachin Tendulkar. If, only..

Respect to the man who has earned it - from everyone alike.

Each had his style of play. There was nothing that each can take away from the other. Both giants in their own right, and both have played to their content, and to their abilities.

Why not say we were lucky to see them together ?

I have been watching him since he debuted and have always admired his level headedness, pure hard work and maturity in dealing with situations on and off the ground. We have been privileged to watch him play more than once.

He is someone who always adapted well to the demands of the situation whether in Tests or in 20/20's match, being a test specialist that speaks volumes about his talent, ability and attitude.

No doubt, the both of them are exceptional players.

I said what I said with the intention that, had that been the case, Dravid would have received every bit of the acknowledgement he deserved. For now, most Indians refuse to look beyond Tendulkar.

In the last 10 years, millions of people have said or written that Dravid doesn't receive enough acknowledgement. I think that also amounts to acknowledgement.

A big thanks to Dravid for all his contributions to the beautiful game of Cricket. He was and is a collosus of the game and one of the big reasons for India's best time ever on the international arena. A consummate professional and a thorough gentleman, he is the ultimate role model for any youngster (or even senior player) who wants to reach the top echelons.

Dravid, you will be missed.

Thanks Rahul, for all the efforts and memories.

But most importantly, thanks to the middle class upbringing of these fine rooted fellows (Ganguly, Kumble, Dravid, Srinath, Tendulkar, Laxman in no particular order/ priority) that brought a sense of belief, respectability and dignity to the sport after the match fixing saga.

Re: Tribute to "The Wall" - Rahul Dravid, announces retirement from Tests.

In my view, there can never be any tribute that would suffice the work and hard efforts that this guy has done for the game.

He is truly a masterclass and no one ever in Indian cricket in the ages to come would be able to fill his shoes.
My view is this is too premature a decision for the demi god. He has another 2 years of test cricket for sure left in him. Let there be a player who can fullfill his shoes and prove they are worth replacing the legend and then he can retire.

This is purely bcos of the unwanted hype and the TRP that media wanted. They wanted to sensationalise every nonsense thing and the result. Putting a great man under pressure and forcing him to decide earlier than expected.

There was never a real sense of drop in form for this great. One good series in England was forgotten and media was all there to only highlight one bad Aussie series.

Time for these media crooks to grow up and realise and behave responsibly.

This is not meant to hurt anyone but the saddening state of affairs in our country and the media being poorly responsible.

Although there is no one to replace him, it couldn't have been a good enough reason for him to not retire. Great cricketers do have to retire and we will still have good ones coming through.
His achievements are there for everyone to see. Best of luck for future.

Re: Tribute to "The Wall" - Rahul Dravid, announces retirement from Tests.

Rahul Dravid was indeed a gentleman both on and off the field. Such men are few and far between.
I have memories of watching him batting through with mental resolve and determination even at times when he was 'out of form'.
Relatives who attended functions in Bangalore and spotted him there often commented on his lack of airs and unassuming nature.
He was a true gentleman who will be missed.

So the gentleman exits from the gentleman's game. Hope he would contribute to cricket in whatsoever form. The second famous wall after the Berlin one.

He was one of the most attractive personality on the cricket field. His presence in the field was confidence inspiring.

Probably, he could be the only reason, I would be watching IPL this season. Who know if he will bat ever again after this season.

Re: Tribute to "The Wall" - Rahul Dravid, announces retirement from Tests.

He deserved a proper farewell just like how Anil Kumble & Ganguly got on the field ! Or maybe he didn't like it that way, who knows.
Would like to thank him for all the memories, he will be sorely missed.

Now the biggest question, who will replace him at No.3 ??
