Re: The Official Car and Bike Videos Thread!

What could come out of an abandoned mall and a couple of extremely modified Nissan 370Zs, with pro-drivers behind the wheel- one of the best drifting videos!

Re: The Official Car and Bike Videos Thread!

You got to hand it to Jaguar-Land Rover for the stunts they pull off for PR.

The Discovery Sport Tows 100 Tonne Train in Switzerland

The Land Rover Discovery Sport demonstrates its towing capability in Northern Switzerland as it towed a 100 tonne train in the Rhine region.

The unmodified vehicle employed its semi-autonomous driving technology and it’s 180 PS Ingenium Engine as it towed the train, which weighs the same as a Boeing- 757 over 10 km.

Re: The Discovery Sport Tows 100 Tonne Train in Switzerland

Towing a train which weighs the same as a medium size airplane is definitely not the same deal as towing that airplane. Still, a big feat but nothing like VW's 747 towing feat!

Re: The Discovery Sport Tows 100 Tonne Train in Switzerland

A car pulls a train. It sounds like a stunt scene from some Bollywod movie.
But When I saw this yesterday, I couldn't believe it

Also that Rail to road conversion(or stabilisers as they have written) is a wonderful modification.
I guess its a very good solution to Shiradi ghat woes

Quoting Landrover's website article of this towing with more details.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV achieved an incredible feat in Switzerland on the 16th of June 2016, towing three luxury train carriages with a combined weight of more than 100 tonnes along a railway track. This remarkable demonstration of towing capability saw the vehicle pulling what is effectively the same weight as a Boeing-757 airplane.

What makes the feat even more remarkable is that the Discovery Sport’s drivetrain remained unchanged with the only modification being the fitment of rail wheels by British road-to-rail 4x4 conversion specialists Aquarius Railroad Technologies to act as ‘stabilisers’. The train pull itself was a nod to Land Rover’s heritage referencing the notable launch of Discovery I in 1989, and included a crossing of the River Rhine on the dramatic Hemishofen bridge, a historic steel span measuring 935 feet long and soaring 85 feet above the valley floor.

Powered by Jaguar Land Rover’s 180PS Ingenium diesel engine providing 430Nm of torque, the vehicle undertook a 10km journey whilst effectively pulling 58 times its own weight. The power on offer from the engine was complemented by Land Rover’s towing and traction technologies including Terrain Response, Tow Assist, Tow Hitch Assist and All Terrain Progress Control – a semi-autonomous off-road driving system that automatically manages engine output and braking.

Using these technologies the Discovery Sport completed the pull without the aid of low-range gears, relying solely on its state-of-the-art 9-speed automatic gearbox and Terrain Response technology to generate the necessary traction. Land Rover’s All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) system was engaged at the press of a button helping to maximise traction at a set speed, acting much like a ‘low-speed cruise control’.

Karl Richards, Lead Engineer for Stability Control Systems at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Towing is in Land Rover’s DNA, and Discovery Sport is no exception. Over the years, we have introduced game-changing towing technologies to take the stress out of towing for our customers. I’ve spent most of my career travelling to the most punishing parts of the world to test Land Rovers in gruelling conditions, yet this is the most extreme towing test I’ve ever done.”
Also in telgraph.co.uk website also has some more photos and writes that this is not the first time that a Landrover had been used to pull a train
Quote:
Land Rover has a history of rail conversions, from the days of the Series II and IIA Land Rover to the various Defender models that have been modified to run on rails for maintenance, and the notable launch of Discovery I in 1989, when a converted Discovery towed a series of carriages in Plymouth to demonstrate the capability of the then-new 200Tdi diesel engine.

Superb video. AutoX takes modified cars around the Buddh. I see a BHPian's ride too .

Trust me, this guy can drive. The Zen & Swift laps will surprise you (refer to lap timings at the end).

Thanks for sharing, but I guess Ken Block oozes a lot more character when it comes to drifting. Probably my expectation was higher, these guys somehow didn't cut it! I noticed two instances of bumper scraping, that's a turn off.

If you have watched Top Gear India, try this as well...

I cannot find this linked on Team BHP and thought some of you might enjoy seeing it.

Guy Martin is a real British hero - a talented, fearless and successful motorcycle road racer, world record breaker and all-round character famous also for his love of engineering, he still works in the family business and owns a 27 litre Rolls-Royce Merlin engine as fitted to the Spitfire fighter plane. Many petrol heads in the UK would love to see him as a Top Gear presenter.

In this 2 part special for UK television Guy travels to India to ride a Royal Enfield and drink lots of tea.

Apologies if this has been shared before as it is not new. I used search function to try to find if it had been seen and could not find it, the risk of reposting was better than the risk of you guys all missing a programme I thought was much better than Top Gear India!

I would love to buy a Bullet from Mr Singh - what a cool gentleman! I loved watching him explain how one must ride a bike to one of the fastest motorcycle racers on the planet

Rob, that guy is a legend! I've picked up his autobiography in UK, but haven't got around to reading it. Would love to read "when you dead, you dead" as well.

Unfortunately, the video you shared is not accessible in India. Blocked content.

Cheers,
Sting
