The ninth edition of Aero India 2013 will commence from 6th February 2013 and will end on 10th February 2013.
Today I had the opportunity to be a spectator to the complete rehearsal of the air display. This was possible only because of Aravind (Starvegabond) whose neighbour is an Air Force personnel, we were escorted by the gentleman through the main gates of the Air Force station Yelahanka and were made to witness the air display right opposite the ATC Tower. A big shout of thanks to Arvind for the invite. Here are some pics of the event.

Hari, are the US air force part of the show this year? Didn't see it in the papers. The F16 is from USAF right? No F-18? C-17 Globe master?

No, Viddy, I doubt if the USAF is having flight displays this time, there was a C-17 but on static display. the F-16 was from France I was told and there is no F-18 too. The whole show seemed watered down this time.

Thus a morning was well spent, the advantage we had was, we were away from the crowds and got some good vantage points to click the snaps and we did not have to buy any tickets .

Nice pictures. I remember having attended this in 2010 or so. Loved it. I didn't have a single worthy pic though (poor digi cam). Thanks for a set of nice pics Hari!

That is Visual treat for all the poor souls like me, who did not/ ( or is it cannot ) attend such shows.
Can you name the helicopter in which the Chief Guest arrived ? That and the following 3-4 pics of another helicopter looks interesting.

What is the name of helicopter in these pictures ? Also, what is the helmet like thing on nose of the helicopter. From the angle which it was taken, it looks like some soldier is flying parallel to the helicopter with his helmet and Rifle.

Its HAL LCH (Light Combat Helicopter).
As far as I know its still at testing stage and not yet commissioned. I may be wrong though. Did not follow some of the defence forums for quiet some time now.

That's the sensor assembly. It houses CCD camera, IR imaging sensors, Laser range finder and things like that.

Thanks for clearing that up. I may be wrong, but if it is not commissioned yet, how can that be used to ferry the Chief guest ? And from the pictures, it does not like look light at all. Infact it looks like a people mover in helicopter terms.

Oh yeah. I got confused with the TD2 version of it which is still under trials

The helicopter used to ferry VIPs is the MI8 (One in Blue colour), the Black Colour Helicopter is the Light Combat Helicopter.

The helmet like thing on the nose is the sensor suite

The LCH's modern sensor suite, developed in cooperation with Israel, consists of a CCD Camera, forward-looking infrared imaging sensors and a laser range finder to facilitate target acquisition in all weather conditions, including at night. The EW suite has been procured from SAAB, South Africa.

Also, it is actually an AEW&C system. It's flying for the first time in an air show but its onboard systems won't be turned on.

AEW&C(Airborne Early Warning and Control) is also known by the older terms "airborne early warning" (AEW) and "airborne warning and control system" (AWACS, pron.: /ˈeɪwæks/ AY-waks) although AWACS is the name of a specific system currently used by NATO and the USAF and is often used in error to describe similar systems.
