One of the benefits of living in uncle Sam's land - fast internet.

How much do you pay for your broadband?-ss.jpg

I pay $29.95+modem rental+tax, comes to appx $35 a month. Haven't checked in a long time, but I believe that this is the cheapest/slowest package TW cable offers in my area.
No caps of any sorts - although couple of my friends got warnings due to liberal use of torrents.
It is always tough to adjust to BSNL when I get back to India.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I have Reliance broadnet and pay some 600-odd every month. It comes with a free landline that I don't bother using. It is really painful with too much downtime and extremely slow for a so-called broadband.

It's possibly where I am located that this is the problem (outer western suburbs of Pune). Airtel which I was very happy with earlier does not have a connection in my building. When I move will probably get a BSNL landline with broadband- hear it is the best.

Yes Noop. Pune doesnt have good broadband infrastructure. BSNL exchange is 0.5Km from my place and still they cant provide me a connection.

that is a sad connection, yes you have 20Mbps down stream, but that upstream is worse than connections in India interms of the DL:UL ratio

But he doesnt have any monthly cap on data usage. Unless he uses his connection to upload videos or maintains a server, that 1mbps upstream is very good.

For the creators of content, they may need better upload speeds. Most of us basically are consumers of content, and for that download speeds matter.

My upload is almost next to nothing - barring a few photos on facebook etc. So doesn't really matter. And the numbers are exactly what was promised while signing up.

No, no charges should be applicable after 5GB as well though with reduced speed as you mentioned.

That is what they say as 5GB UNLIMITED.

BSNL 750 Unlimited. Initially there were problems with the connection, but as of now no problem. Download speeds unto 120 Kb/s many times but 50 Kb/s is minimum.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

I recently upgraded my home broadband to 8Mbps plan (Transonic 80GB) from Airtel for Rs 1500 pm. Attached is the result of a speed test. As expected, local servers show great speed, but if I choose servers abroad, things can go really slow. Since most of the website are hosted in US, a speed of 8Mbps here is effectively no faster than a speed of 2Mbps over there.

What's the speed? Is it genuinely unlimited? Because most ISPs in India have fair usage crap.

I use MTS MBlaze USB Modem. To stay away from bank-breaking bills, I've stayed on pre-paid. Do 999 recharge every month of a 2Mbps speed with a SO-CALLED unlimited usage. But the speed is capped beyond 10GB usage under fair usage policy. I'm not charged beyond 10GB but the speed gets down to 512 Kb.

6mbps unlimited for 600 ? There has to be a limit somewhere, else this is great.

Re: How much do you pay for your broadband?

For guys staying in Mumbai, try 5net. It's a local network.

Benefits:
  • Cheap plans. 1mbps at 700/month and 5mbps at 10000/year.
  • No FUP, download limit and such crap in their unlimited plans.
  • Has a hub where the total data shared is 400-500TB. You will get whatever you will ever need on this hub. The 'download' speed will fluctuate between 2-5mbps.
  • Has presence in central, western and eastern Mumbai. Also is present in Thane and Navi Mumbai.
  • 3mbps download speed on sites like Youtube, Microsoft, etc.
  • Support isn't that fast.
  • There are complaints of some downtime during the rainy season. Haven't experienced it though.
  • Not available in every suburb. Eg., it's not available in Kandivili and Malad in the west.
