Fat Loss & Weight Training Myths

"Contrary to what the infomercials suggest there is no such thing as spot reduction. Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern dependent upon genetics, sex (hormones), and age. Overall body fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area."

Start working with weights. Full body or split workouts.

why don't you run on the treadmill on all 4 days.
Do around 15 minutes and try to cover 2.5kms in that time.
As for flat or inclined, inclined running gives better results, however if you feel discomfort in your knee, do flat running. This stands true for all exercise. If you feel pain, change exercise. By mail I mean bony joint pain, and not muscle cramps kind of pain you will experience for the first few days

Eddy,

Run on the treadmill directly after your weights workout.Your body is already drained(thats if you worked out like an animal) so cardio is good after weights. Some say rest after weights, take protein and then after 30mins start cardio but I think its too much work and a waste of time.

I would say run flat one day, next day incline or both on same day. Cardio is boring as it is, just mix it up.

Your schedule has NO WEIGHT TRAINING??? Fix this as fast as possible. Oh and fire your instructor if he told you "dont do weights."

+1 to the above.
I had a trainer in my previous gym(the best trainer i had come across till now).
He advised me to run atleast 2-3kms right after your weight training as it helps in burning calories and reducing body fat a lot(reasons are mentioned above).

@1-Testosterone- I would really like to know which ones you recommend.
So far i had - Iso Sensation 93, Nitrotech hardcore, Myofusion.

Hi Gagan,

No weights for me till now (1.5 months). Although I must admit that this was my decision since I wanted to concentrate more on weight loss rather than muscle gain. But my logic is flawed, ain't it ?

Yes it is.
And i don't blame you. Even if you had this logic your trainer should have informed you this is the wrong process and weight training is a must in your requirement.
Anyways its never too late so you can start now on

To be honest, he did ask me to do some weights but I insisted otherwise. Can someone help me with a schedule for four days a week, one hour per day.

The truth is that I don't trust the trainer so much and go to this particular gym only 'coz its conveniently located, has 3 treadmills (one of which is generally free) and is in my budget.

Guys who think that slogging on the treadmill is the answer to fat burn do look at interval training using Squats/Deadlifts/Pushups etc.

Provided of course you dont have a weak heart or knee/back etc

Forget weights for now. Don't start doing bicep and tricep curls for atleast 2 months. And a 5kg dumbbell will not be useful for any compound exercises like chest presses or shoulder presses. Perhaps you can still do those, but keep doing a variation until you get exhausted (atleast 20-30 reps should be possible within 2 weeks)

Squats. Start with a set of 25, and atleast 3-5 sets a day. Your goal will be to do atleast 100 squats in a single set without stopping.

Diet will play a bigger role than whatever way you decide to exert your body, so keep a watchful eye on what's going inside that stomach. Make it a habit to read the nutritional information printed on everything you buy. Don't stop eating completely, just eat the right food, enough of it, at the right time.
