India Broadband Review

Hi All,
I have been a broadband user in India for over 2 years now.... When I came back to India in March 2004, I got installed Sify Broadband for 2500 Rs Installation charges. I got the 256kbps 1 Gb connection back than for 2000 Rs per month. As you can imagine it was very expensive, and I hardly downloaded anything. Stuck with Sify for 1.5 years and changed plans from 128k unlimited to 256 k unlimited as packages became cheaper. Here are some pros and cons of Sify:

Pros:
1) No phone recquired
2) Cheapest plans
3) Prepaid - no hidden costs ( I ended up paying 7k to Hathway for download while in Bangalore, thus absolutely love that Sify is prepaid)

Cons:
1) Poor Service, things like rain meant connection outage
2) Day download limited to 150 mb even on unlimited plan
3) Local provider wanting maintainence
4) Outage of internet due to bad wiring at least 3 times a month

Plan: 256 Kbps Unlimited (150 Mb during day)
Price: 845
Speed: 33KBps

After a dissapointing experience with Sify, I moved on to MTNL broadband. Below are some pros and cons.

Pros:
1) MTNL hai, toh sahi hai
2) No outages in internet

Cons:
1) Plans are absolete, and they dont change them very often
2) Poor service in trying to change plans, have to go to office and fill forms
2) ADSL Router unlike sify ethernet... electricity consumption
3) Phone required from MTNL

Plan: 256 kbps 1 Gb download
Speed: 30 KBps
Price: Around 600 Rs

Lastly there was airtel in our area installing phone lines and internet. After being fed up with Sify, and being lazy to change MTNL plan, I went ahead with Airtel plan. This plan totally blew me away. I cant stop praising about this internet.

Pros:
1) Highest speed achieved till date on all internet used. Recieve 28 KBbs during the day and 60 KBps from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am
2) No internet outages
3) Excellent helpline
4) Public IP on PC (with bridge mode)
5) No download restriction during the day or night

Cons:
1) Phone line bill for 300 Rs not needed (will get it cancelled was not made clear to me that we have to pay phone rental as well)
2) ADSL Router unlike sify ethernet... electricity consumption
3) Not as techie helpdesk operators as Sify, but more helpful and faster turnaround time

Plan: Home 999 Rs
256 kpbs Unlimited
Speed: Day: 28 KB Night: 60 KB

Would love to know if there are any other broadband packages from other ISPs in 1000 Rs range. What speeds do you guys get???

aseem, me too using a Sify..

I m using unlimited 64kbps with unlimited downloads
It cost me an annual registration and installation :Rs1200
and per month :Rs 525

But i m not fully satisfied wid the service..
Most problems you discussed already. The annual charge is near renewal, i guess i will change to some other broadband.
Most of my pals suggested BSNL.. May be i"ll stick with that

ASEEM

I have recently switched from Sify to Airtel Broadband. My plan is Home 699 unlimited. Day speeds=13kBps, Night speeds=22kBps.
They told me that telephone instrument is essential for unlimited plans. But they didnt tell me about the 300 rental you are talking about (I am yet to receive my first bill though). All they said that the instrument charges Rs.500 will be added in the first bill, so that my first bill will be around 1200~1300. After that, my monthly bills will be around Rs. 780, if i dont make any outgoing voice calls.

Dceite, I have the same plan unlimited 699, and I am using it for say 7-8 months and I am very satisfied with the speed and customer support offered by the airtel. I get download speed of 13 KBps(once got 30-40 KBps) during day and night speed often reaches 50-60 KBps.

When they sell their plan they offer speed of 256 Kbps but what we receive is nowhere to the figure, Can anyone explain why?

Are u people paying monthly rent for the Modem or have bought it by paying one time amount of xxxRs.?

Even i use the Airtel 699Rs pack . It is 128plan and the download speeds are around 10-15kbps. The customer care is amazing with airtel. I used to have Sify Broadband before for 2 years , very bad customer care, and rainy day and the very next day connectivity problems. Next i shifted to Bharathi (ex-Airtel) , it was slow and ok, not bad. But now with Airtel....enjoying every minute...wish i could shift to the 256Kbps pack (999Rs)(is it unlimited dload or 1GB???)

Just signed up for Airtel 999 plan a few days back (one time registration charges Rs.500).. The Rs.999 includes speeds upto (note the upto) 256kbps during the daytime and double speed between 10.30pm to 6.30am. Call charges are Re.1 per call.. No rental for the phone. Bonus package.. for the 1st 3 months free calls to 3 local phone (landline or mobile) and STD calls to any single number @ Re.1 per minute. Have heard about their superb helpdesk and service and am finally shifting from H500 plan of BSNL. Started using internet right from the 15th of Aug. 1995 and have used VSNL (both dial-up and broadband), Sify (dial-up), Dishnet (dial-up), BSNL (Broadband), but this scheme takes the cake
