Re: India's new Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas. How good is it?

There might also be the case of the pilots themselves opting for a particular plane. For example, the IAF clearly liked the Mirage 2000 over the other planes that it was flying and we can see the Mirage's dna over the Tejas.

Qualitatively, there might be metrics for comparison, but am not sure if they could be compared with another plane on a user preference issue. Havent flown any sort of aircraft other than paper ones so cant really opine. Though can say with authority that some paper planes made from the same notebook used to fly better than others.

On another note, why are the Chinese so good at reverse engineering. What has been their driving factor and can that be replicated through policy?

I completely understand the ecosystem approach and agree that the Chinese are way ahead of us in developing ecosystems - manufacturing, commercial, diplomatic and political.

.
That is a good question. I believe the Chinese understood the concept around eco-system very early onwards. And they know it takes decades to develop. Until you do, you just steal from the best, till such time you believe you can do better by yourself then the guys your are stealing from.

Happens in just about all industries. If I look at my "own" Industry, the Chinese were ahead of just about anybody (both in the devices and infrastructure space). Since they have come a long way. But they have copied just about everything from all their competitors for the last two decades. Some of it were true copies, they did not even hide the fact that they copies. You can not touch Chinese on copyright.

Currently just started Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Ten years ago the Chinese brought in extra staff for these events. And all they did all day is go from exhibitor to exhibitor and just photograph/video anything ins ight on their stand!..

In some industries the Chinese have not just caught up, but might be leading the world.

The reason is simple the Mirage 2k is a multirole aircraft and the Mig 29 is an air superiority fighter. In dog fight exercises of the IAF, the Mig 29 has bested Mirage 8-9/10 times. But the mirage could do that no other aircraft could do during the Kargil war i.e. drop bombs at a precision from a steep angle and very high altitude at targets that were untouched by the Bofors gun. This went a long way in us winning the Kargil war after the Mig 27 and the Jaguar both failed at this when they were tasked with this before the Mirage took over. That was when it was decided that the Tejas must emulate the Mirage design as it was envisioned for both interceptor and ground attack roles. In fact such was the fan following of the Mirage that India wanted to buy out the Dassault Mirage assembly line but unfortunately it was closed by the time the decision was made after all the years of red tapeism. So that was another reason why the Rafale is such a favorite of the IAF for its next fighter.

Off Topic: The SEPECAT Jaguar is a deep penetration strike bomber. Was that the reason it wasnt able to perform at the heights of Kargil?

Going back to the Tejas, with Mark2 becoming heavier, will Mark1 be the one developed for the Naval version? It was rejected as it was too heavy for the aircraft carriers.

Developing the ecosystem will the key factor, as it can be seen with the Howitzers that L&T and Kalyani have developed. Probably another 10-15 years before it becomes settled.

Re: India's new Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas. How good is it?

I have been attending Aero India since 2011 and one thing I have noticed is increaed agility of Tejas. Earlier it used to do vertical climbs, slow barrel rolls and inverted. This time is did a very slow speed flyby with very high AoA. I knew that FOC mandated 28° AoA but did not expect for a demo

The next generation SPORT platform based on Tejas for simulating any kind of bird our IAF has in its inventory. The future of Aircraft development sounds very positive if everything said in this video is achieved. The swarm of advanced drones etc sound sci-fi and state of art. Hope redtapism and lethargy doesn't make these projects a mere paper Queens.

Isnt it Marut's evolution? Mirage might have looked like Marut too but its difficult to say in aircrafts.

I am not an expert , so my observations are not completely scientific. If you were to look at the HF 24 Marut wings, they are quite different from the Tejas and the Mirage. The latter two are much more similar.
