What is medically induced coma?

A medically induced coma is when a patient receives a controlled dose of an anesthetic, typically propofol, pentobarbital or thiopental, to cause a temporary coma or a deep state of unconsciousness. This type of coma is used to protect the brain from swelling by reducing the metabolic rate of brain tissue, as well as the cerebral blood flow. Throughout a medically induced coma, a patient’s critical life functions are constantly monitored by an anesthesiologist or other physician in a critical care setting only.

Agreed but Schumi's coma wasn't caused due to the accident. Which was what Gansan was asking.

May have been, and has been medically prolonged. With major brain trauma he may convulse when coming out, and the consequence will be disastrous. Let the brain settle.

He slipped into a coma sometime after the accident although he was conscious right after it indicating serious brain injury and high intracranial pressure. He was put into a medically induced coma after the initial surgery to prevent further brain swelling.

Schumacher's friend Philippe Strieff told reporters outside the hospital on Friday that the German's life was no longer in danger.

He said: "I'm not a doctor, I'm repeating what Gerard Saillant (surgeon and friend of the Schumacher family) told me.


"Gerard Saillant said it is a serious condition but his life is not in danger anymore now, thankfully."


However, no official statement has been made by the hospital or Schumacher's representatives to confirm those claims.

Sounds like good news. Just curious though, what are the chances of Memory Loss?

Movies tend to make it seem that memory loss occurs quite often and that the cure is for the person to be hit on the head in the exact same place that the first incident occurred. We don't understand the brain enough to be able to predict if a particular problem would occur. If our brains were simple enough for us to understand, then we wouldn't have the cognitive ability to understand the functioning of the brain.

on the memory loss stuff, we wish he comes out in top shape but one thing is for sure, he would remember very little of this accident.
