Re: Your longest walk?

The longest we Indians would walk would either be during a pilgrimage trip or while visiting a particular temple like Siddhivinayak in Mumbai.

And in case if you are a Mumbaikar it would have been during the 2005 Mumbai floods as a lot of people had to walk that day under very dreadful conditions.

I and my dad walk a lot, but I guess the longest has to be when I went walking from Dahisar to Dadar (Siddhivinayak), which would be around 28 to 30 kms.

Re: Your longest walk?

Tuticorin - Tiruchendur (~ 40 Km) a few times in the mid 80's, on pilgrimage. We used to start as a group around 9.00 PM, take a tea break every 10 KM, and reach around 4.00 AM.

A couple of times from the foothills to Tirumala.

When walking in a group, the group can move only as fast as the slowest man!

Re: Your longest walk?

~12 km in Varanasi after giving my IIT JEE prelim examination around 14 years back. The travel path was from Lanka to Cantt Railway Station and back. Basically I was just walking and walking without thinking about anything. While back in evening, met few friends on the way and went on watching Mohabbatein movie in Taksal.

Re: Your longest walk?

There was a time I had to walk daily 9+9km in a day while going to college. It was due to the road work which lasted for around 3months...!!!

Re: Your longest walk?

I have walked 25~30 km in a day many times during the college days. The longest would have been around 50 km or more from Yercaud to Dharmapuri. Some of the ones I still remember are:
  1. Salem to Yercaud along the ghat road (we skipped the shortcut through Gundur). It was a day of hartal/bandh and we had to get back to Yercaud on the same day. We had come down to Salem the previous day to conduct a football tournament on the Jail ground. 5-6 of us started in the morning around 7 a.m. from Salem with a loaf of bread and a couple of bottles of water. Some kind souls gave us tea on the way. We reached Yercaud by 4:30 p.m. or so.
  2. Yercaud to Salem through Gundur to watch the Tamil movie "Chinna Thambi" at one of the cinemas in Salem
  3. The loop road of Yercaud which is around 30 km.
  4. Once we walked around Yercaud and surrounding hills from morning till late evening during a Scout Master's training. We should have reached a particular estate by noon. But one of our team members did not get the compass reading right and we ended up walking till evening getting close to Dharmapuri. We were finally found and rescued by evening.
  5. Many shorter ones like Kotagiri to Kodanadu view point, Yercaud to Gundur village (every week for a year). Gundur is half-way down to Salem through the hills (not following the main road)
  6. Kotagiri to Ooty

I have done several long walks - notable amongst them would be the times we used to do the Erumeli to Sabarimala for many years and the several walks from the foothills of Tirupati to Tirumala.

One walk I would have preferred never happened was the 26th July Mumbai deluge - stuck at lower Parel and had to wade thru to reach Andheri and this lasted a good 7 hours.

Re: Your longest walk?

My longest was ~14-15, but was many years ago. I have done many 10+es back in India and here in Netherlands. Many of you have done 20+ - which is great and inspiring. Let me try doing a 20 soon!!

Re: Your longest walk?

i think i have the longest one yet here. a couple of years ago together with a friend i completed the santiago di compostella pilgrim walk through the portuguese west coast - from porto in portugal to santiago di compostella in spain. all 270 odd kms in 9 days averaging 30+ kms every single day without any break. needless to say, finished with blisters and aches all over. but it was an experience of my lifetime. perhaps i may write a travelogue about it.

Re: Your longest walk?

I have done about 10km (5+5 to and fro)stretch at once - walked continuously for 2 hours.
Why?
Just to check how it would be during the days when people didn't have proper transport.

To be honest, the last 2-3 km (about 1/2 hr) were deadly, and really required will power to continue.

Re: Your longest walk?

I have walked 18 kms from my home to a temple ( Eichnari, Ganesh temple ) Did it a couple of times. Dont remember exactly, but took about 3.1/2 - 4 Hrs I think.

While I enjoyed during rains, during sunny days you will want to reach the destination earlier !

Re: Your longest walk?

Interesting thread
6kms to Hemkunt Sahib then 6kms back, and straight around 12kms one way to VOF
So total 36kms in one day.
The previous day we did 15kms walk to Ghangria from Goving Ghat.
The next day again 15kms sprint downhill, as there was a forecast of cloudburst.

Total within 48 hours = approx 70kms of walking.
