Hello members, just thought that it would be a noble gesture for us all to remember & make a short prayer for the citizens of Mumbai, who fell prey to nature's fury on this day last year (26/7/05) in the worst ever floods which paralysed the city & finally resulted in huge amounts of human & financial loss.

The kind of rains that came down on Mumbai that day would have left any city in the world paralysed though the degree of flooding would'nt be as drastic. A lot of promises of improvements were made that day too. A year later would also be a good time to ask Vilasrao Deshmukh and his colleagues about the improvements, if any actually done. Problem is neither the citizens nor the media will follow up on this. Not only public memory but media interest in any issue is also short and that allows our politicians to get away every single time!

I was there last year when it happened, and I experienced the flooding first hand (my car got submerged but luckily i was close to home so I just walked it up). In my openion a lot of the casualties could have been avoided by an effective early warning system and maybe declare a public holiday if a storm is impending. But anyways it was a sad incident and i hope and pray mumbai never goes through natural disasters like this ever...

I must say the drainage system of mumbai is not as bad when compared to a lot of places here in US... I have seen roads flood withing minutes of heavy rains over here. As we all are aware that high tides played a huge role in mumbai floodings. Drainage system needs to be improved but at the same time it is kind off comforting to know that mumbai can survive a normal rainy season with minimal damage...

At that time I was travelling weekly by train from Pune to Mumbai and back. I managed avoid the worst of the floods -- but even then it was amazing to see so many little lakes that actually rose up to track level in some areas. Nevertheless the trains ran at crawling pace. Hats off to the Mumbai authorities and people for handling a disaster of this magnitude and my deep sympathies for the families of the victims.
