I have been toying with the idea of writing a story and possibly a movie script later. But I have no idea about the format of a movie story or a script. I'd love to hear from experts on how to go about it. |
Hi Sanjay,
Good to know there's another person out there who's at the same stage where I was 3-4 months back. I thought I had quite a few good stories which will make into nice movies. Then I read this online: "Story is the basic outline. For Titanic, the 'story' would be a romantic historical drama aboard the Titanic. A basic plot outline.
A script sets out what people will say, where the plot goes and how, etc. This is where any plot twists, all characters and character motivations come into play. This is a dialogue based story that is, for the most part, complete.
A screenplay is the script adapted for film. This includes visual cues and descriptions to help in filming and directing, along with character cues to help in acting. Screenplays often include things like: "FADE IN to a close up shot of a flower..." etc, but include the script in it. So I began by writing a rough outline. Then I read a few script which are available online: http://www.scribd.com/doc/47105358/Udaan-1 and http://www.scribd.com/doc/89523491/Dev-D-script You can also go through Tarantino's scripts like these http://gregorymancuso.com/wp-content...f-download.pdf and you can google for Kill Bill scripts too. They're awesome.
I'm still writing the outline after 3-4 months because work has been very tasking these days. But I plan to take a break for a month to get into the serial writing mode.
BTW, I'm exploring this website quite a lot these days. It's gold for newbies like us: http://thescriptlab.com/ |
