RIP R.K. Laxman - The 'Common Man' cartoonist

Noted cartoonist Sri R. K. Laxman passed away today after a brief illness and hospitalization for several days.

At this juncture it may be remembered that the wheelchair-bound Laxman (84 years old at that time), had cried when presented the Life Time Achievement Award, like a baby as former President APJ Abdul Kalam and others watched in amazement. The tears were unexpected. The grim faced czar of cartooning is not known to demonstrate his emotions in public.

Shocked.

As of y'day night, his condition was rapidly fluctuating- on & off the ventilator.

May he rest in peace. I'll always remember going through the ToI, and the Common Man's various avatars. Him, and his brother- R.K Narayan. What a duo!

RIP.

The Asian Paints mascot Gattu was created by him in 1954.

Over the course of his long career, Sri Laxman won many awards. The Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in 1973; The Ramon Magsaysay Award for excellence in journalism went to him in 1984 and he received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour, in 2005.

Great cartoonist.
If you hear thunder later in the night rest assured that he has reached heaven and drawn a cartoon(with his trademark crow/coat/umbrella) of God and angels and they are roaring with laughter.
RIP R K Laxman

re: RIP R.K. Laxman - The 'Common Man' cartoonist

RIP respected sir. The message the great cartoonist portrayed in his cartoons through the common man was so simple yet very much to the point and relevant to the context. Not a single day goes by when opening a newspaper the first thing that was read was Common man's cartoons.

You will be sorely missed and very difficult to fill the void.

May his soul rest in peace. RK Laxman's work outlined the struggle of the common man like no one else did. A huge void that cannot be filled.
