"Unfortunately" for us. Barring pockets in a few cities, Airtel has only one competition - BSNL. So they know they can get away with offering good Tariff packages just in one or two cities.
Unless there is fiber penetration across the country with multiple operators in fray, Airtel is going to go the Comcast way. Call it the unfree free market where there is a choice, but only of one.

They are not even offering uniform package across one city. In Chennai they are offering a competitive pack in areas covered by ACT, and higher priced packs in areas not reached by them.

While India wisely rejected free basics, some countries like Angola went for it.

And this is what has happened now: http://motherboard.vice.com/read/wik...es-zero-rating

Nice read. This sums it up well.

^^Actually I was appalled to learn that NASSCOM tried to support Free Basics by quietly slipping in an exception to their net neutrality stance after meeting with Facebook.

Makes me thankful for people like Pahwa and PayTM's Nitin Pai. And not the least, for the thousands of internet warriors who waged the battle on Facebook walls till we sat up and did something about it.

+1.

Everyone hates a tyrant, until they get to become one themselves.

I'm not shocked by Facebook's shenanigans, they're a for-profit business who'll go to whatever lengths possible, I'm more concerned about organisations like NASSCOMM that can secretly betray an entire nation's IT agenda the moment a carrot gets dangled.

^^Absolutely. If anything the protagonists in the article seem to have no doubt that Zuckerberg's intentions were good.

For those who still wonder how can something like Free Basics be harmful.

Imagine, a private corporation decides on the Internet what news you see and what you do not.

We have already seen this in Cable TV scenario. News channels critical of govt in some states have been taken off the local cable network.

Somebody, people think such cronyism is only possible with local cable operator, and big corporations are somehow pillars of justice and fairness. The road to hell is paved with good intentions I guess.

I'm not surprised at Facebook's actions, it's very common practice out here in the US. It's a open fact that the buzz on most (if not all) big news channels was meagre whenever Sanders won in a state, while Hillary used to get the full blitz every time she won.

Unfortunately the US news reporting model is highly skewed and used to selective reporting.

Ain't it funny that governments can take a service conceived and built by private parties and regulate it? It should not be a government's job to meddle with the market. After all, they did not build it.

As somebody said: "Governments take away your freedom to do something and then sell the same back to you as licence".

Return of SOPA..

SOPA is returning in form amendment to DMCA act ( Digital Millennium Copyright Act 1998). Music industry is lobbying US Congress to amend the fair use policy and insert take down stay down clause. According to this clause its duty of website to remove copyrighted material and the material should never surface again using sophisticated algorithms that automatically screens whatever user uploads and if it infringes on copyright it would be deleted and no one will be able to upload again it even if its legitimate. The music industry cites decline in revenue due to outdated DMCA act. The problem with this is Government across the world will twist Google to delete free speech.

Not only it is not funny, but extremely essential in case of public utilities. Now Internet is a public utility that we are unable to live without. Let me give you an example which is quite common in India.

Let's say a Real estate company develops a 10 acre land into a locality. They divide it into numerous sites, build roads to access every site, and they run water pipes and sewage pipes on every roads to provide for every site. Then the company sells the sites to the buyers. All good so far.

Now, who owns the roads? According to you RE company should own it. After all, they never sold the roads or the water/sewage pipes to anybody. After everybody built their homes and start living here, company may decide to impose tolls on the roads they own. They can impose extra frees to use the water/sewage pipes. Hey, they owns the roads and the pipes, so it is their wish. Why should the government interfere?

Think again.

Fortunately government does interfere and fixes the above problem. These days they don't even allow the RE company to sell the plots until the roads are tarred, water/sewage pipes are buried, and certain areas are reserved for parks and other common amenities. In fact, all the common areas and infrastructure (roads/pipes) become government property from day one.

Internet is the modern road.

Free basics may make a back-door entry, as per this article

Re: The fight for net neutrality is on! Time to reclaim the internet

And for those who are still concerned about the rights of private companies, here is a sobering thought. UN Human rights council just declared Internet as basic human right.

https://www.article19.org/data/files...nt_Adopted.pdf

The resolution was passed last Friday, but was opposed by countries including Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and India. What a shameful company we are in...
