All-India bandh on April 30, 2015?

Have been hearing of an All-India bandh on Thursday, April 30. Is this true?

There is confirmed news of Transport strike in Karnataka and a West Bengal bandh on the same day. But no confirmation on the All-India bandh.

Is it just a rumour?

News i heard was there is a transport strike in Karnataka and bus, auto and cabs are participating. Nothing further, so private transportation should be on and peaceful. I hope.

This is against the new motor vehicle amendments.

No such news in Tamil Nadu. Sounds like bandh in Karnataka and West Bengal on the same day. Not an all India bandh.

If media reports are to be believed, the bandh is supposed to be to protest against the proposed Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014.

In Kerala, if this materialises, to my knowledge I think this will be the fourth one of the year so far.

Re: All-India bandh on April 30, 2015?

Below is a bit of information I got from oneindia.com - this will explain What and Why the bandh is called for

Quote:
All India Road Transport Workers' (AIRTW) Federations called for a nation-wide bandh on Thursday, April 30. The bandh has been called to protest against proposed Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014.

What is Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014?
  • BJP-led NDA government introduced the Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014
  • Government introduced the bill following the death of Union Minister Gopinath MundeMunde died during a road accident in Delhi in 2014 (Munde died during a road accident in Delhi in 2014)
  • The Bill will strengthen the way of Vehicle Regulation and Road Safety Authority
  • It will help the authority to issue minimum safety standards for vehicles, roads and its users
  • Authority will maintain a National Unified Information System
  • New system will have details of vehicle registrations, driving licences, insurance, permits, penalties, accidents, etc
  • The Bill will put an end to old practice of holding more than one driving licence
  • People will have only one license following a Unified Driving Licensing System as well as Automated Driving Licence tests
  • The bill proposes a points-based system for recording traffic violations for each licence holder
  • Penalty points for a driver will be displayed on his/her record for three years
  • A total of 12 points would lead to the suspension of licence for one year
  • This is over and above the fines and jail terms defined under the act

Why Bus, auto unions are protesting against the Bill?
[list][*]According to AIRTW, millions of driver, conductors and other workers will lose their employment if the provisions of the Bill is implemented

...
More here: Link .

The Bill will tighten the Vehicle Regulation and Road Safety Authority prescribing minimum safety standards for vehicles, roads and its users. The authority will have to maintain a National Unified Information System, thereby centralising details on vehicle registrations, driving licences, insurance, permits, penalties, accidents, etc

Presently, there are several individuals holding more than one driving licence, the Bill will end this with a Unified Driving Licensing System as well as Automated Driving Licence tests

As of now it's confirmed here and I think everyone will support it as it will be one long weekend. May 1st, Sat and sun. Add Thursday to it and it's 4 days in a row.

Found a news link: http://www.oneindia.com/india/why-bu...e-1730248.html

Some other reports suggest that private vehicles will be spared.

I am planning to drive to Horanadu tomorrow. Will it be safe for me to do so? Or is it advisable not to travel?

And surprisingly, Karnataka State transport is supporting the bandh. On the other hand, the private operators in KA are supporting the new Bill !!!

Support from other sections like cab operators is partial.

I think that a stronger law would be a better thing.
There are undoubtedly going to be growing pains, with many false positives and unfair suspensions because of police greed, but our country's traffic situation has changed a lot in the past 3-4 years, and we have dire need of traffic discipline.

Though I am of the opinion that all vehicles, including private two and three wheelers and private cars should be put under the ambit of such a law.

Re: All-India bandh on April 30, 2015?

This bill is very much needed. How the situation is in Bangalore:
  1. No autos have the brake lights working
  2. Nowadays, most auto drivers do not possess a valid drivers license
  3. No water tankers have brake lights working
  4. No water tankers have brakes that work perfectly
  5. No water tankers have the registration plates that are in a legible condition
  6. 99% of the water tanker drivers do not possess a valid drivers license
  7. Auto drivers and water tankers follow no traffic rules - especially auto drivers. They drive in the opposite lane to overtake and never wait in queue at signals.
  8. No bus lanes in Bangalore. They overtake you from left, right and sometimes over!

Its a jungle out here!

Cheers!
