The Scale Model Thread

I own and have ridden some really special two stroke motorcycles and the power these little screamers can produce is just staggering.

So, one can just wonder what a Grand Prix 500cc two stroke V4 producing 185bhp at 12,500rpm and weighing at just 130 kg would feel like

The Honda NSR500 was produced by HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) and had debuted in 1984 for the Grand Prix motorcycle racing 500cc class. The NS500 was its predecessor and had V3 configuration that handed Freddie Spencer the 1983 World Championship win. The Japanese factory, far from resting on their laurels, introduced a new model that added an additional piston to the engine in 1984. Thus, the NSR500 was born — a bike that would leave its mark on an entire era.

The first model had a series of unique characteristics that did not work particularly well. In the chassis' designs, the exhaust pipes were located in the upper part and the tank underneath the engine and it had a cross between a twin-spar and trellis frame.

In addition to 'turning the bike upside down', Honda added an extra fourth piston, thereby increasing the engine’s power. To make the most of the engine’s increased power, it was fitted with a single crankshaft instead of two counter-rotating crankshafts which minimised losses due to friction. Finally, a reed valve input system was also incorporated that replaced the rotary valves used up until that point.

In the year 1989, the Honda NSR500 was the pinnacle of acceleration. Thanks to its reinforced chassis and a special swingarm that accommodated the expansion chambers in the exhausts, the boost in performance was so great that no other motorcycle could match its acceleration rate or velocity. However, the frame was unstable and difficult to control. On the tracks, this beast could surpass speeds of 310 km/h, and the engineers increasingly turned their attention to ways in which the bike could be made more manageable without compromising its power. With its sheer force, this bike managed to place Eddie Lawson at the top of the competition in 1989.

2002 was the last year for the NSR500. This incredible motorcycle obtained over 130 victories, collected more than 10 world championship riders with six in a row from 1994 to 1999, and 11 constructors. The NSR500 was eventually replaced by the RC211V.

This is a 1:12 metal scale model made by IXO of the 2001 model ridden by Valentino Rossi.

A beautiful documentary about the RC scale model hobbyists in Germany. Some of the works are so well detailed. This includes planes, trucks and train sets.

When it comes to model making, any model making the Germans are in league of their own! The British are very good with steam engine models, but the Germans are probably much better overall. What is also interesting is that it does attract some young folks as well.

Every year the Germans have this absolutely massive Model Hobby Event. It is the world largest exhibition for model making. You will find anything from a simple Airfix model to the sort of completely hand build trucks as shown in your video. They will have RC boats, trucks, cars, model steam engine, model engines, anything under the sun. Lots of accessoires, workshop etc. Plastic, wood, metal, resin, anything goes. Windmills to submarines etc etc.

Of course, this year cancelled due to Covid. But I hope to attend this coming years exhibition. It is Dortmund so my wife and I will probably do a German weekend, Covid permitting!

I love model making, I used to be into mostly aircraft model making and model trains big time.

These days my modelling has taken on a bit of a different twist. Immensely satisfying though, working with one’s hands: Only onto my second model engine though:

So, do you store all your models in their original packing? I have kept all of them in their original packing as I don’t have a space available for them to be displayed, but even when I do I will still hold on to the original packing as it would be easier to be stored or transported when required.

Also, because of our dusty environment I own only a few openable models and majority of them are the sealed resin/metal models.

The cost of your four CMC model Ferrari’s would be equal to the cost of my entire current collection if not more

Yup, all stored in their original packaging. I've added an extra poly wrap around the cartons to reduce shelf wear on the boxes (the box literally adds value

). I have space to display, but just wary of dust and depreciation. At the back of my head, these models are investments.

I managed to acquire one CMC without original packaging and a broken mirror (a 300 SLR with red interiors), so by default this is the only model that I have displayed (managed to fix the mirror eventually)

I prefer openable models only, IMHO the details add to a model's artistic value. I literally have two resin models, one Jonckheere Rolls Royce (by CMR) and a LaFerrari (by MR).

Someday when I have dust proof display arrangements and when I eventually display these models, in my head I'll know that they have openable parts. Not sure if that made any sense, but yea...hope you know what I mean.

That is quite a collection of CMC models.

I only have one till date and its the only engine scale model in my collection of a Ferrari 312 P motor.

I believe the Jonckheere model is from CMF and not CMR if its the black 1:18 scale model you’re referring too as I have one as well.

The original Kawasaki H2 aka “The Widow Maker”.

Named the Kawasaki 750cc H2 Mach IV. When launched in 1972 among all the world's production models, it was the fastest thing on two wheels. Faster than any Suzuki. Faster than any Triumph. Faster than any BSA, and Honda, any anything. With an inline triple 750cc motor producing 74bhp (its closest rival, the Triumph Trident, could muster only 58bhp) but weighed just 8 kilos more than the H1 which was the smaller sibling with a 500cc model with an inline triple model. The result was arm-wrenching acceleration and a blistering 126mph top speed. The industry, the press and the riders who rode it back then hadn't experienced anything quite like it.

The H2 was designed for one thing and one thing only: speed. Noise, pollution, fuel consumption, even handling were all afterthoughts.

There was just one problem the H2’s lightweight tubular cradle frame was simply incapable of containing the vicious performance of the motor. It flexed under cornering, weaved horribly on uneven roads, making finding the right line and sticking to it almost impossible. Kawasaki fitted two steering dampers (one friction and one hydraulic) but they didn't make much difference.

Below is a 1:18 scale metal model made by Solido of the racing version of this legendary motorcycle.

These are 1:76 scale metal models made by Oxford.
