Who better to ask this question: How comfortable do you find that chair? Do you suggest this chair for someone who spends 8-9 hours a day in front of a computer?

Captain, your workstation is the best. The bridge of a ship at sea....makes even aircraft seem passé. That is a biiiig compliment Sir. Been on a merchant ship only once and was completely floored by the automation in the bridge (like yours), the sheer S-I-Z-E of the single MTU engine and the quality & comfort of the cabins. The avians need to learn from the aquatics.

Ankur, I am always willing to oblige those who think my side of the grass is greener. I studied to become a moneylender and see what happened! Amongst other things I turn spanners on the hangar floor. Don't work for either an airport or an airline. I only work for me and my missus (and my kids if they are nice to me in my old age).

I am a trader. This is what my workstation looks like. The 2 screens on the left are for my dealer and the remaining for, well day to day work .

Hi Sanjay.

That chair is quite comfortable for my needs. I spend around 4-6 hrs on it a day. Its height adjustable, has arm rests, curved lumbar support and good under-thigh support and is wide enough to support my shoulder blades. I think these are the essentials for a good chair.
Another important thing is to adjust the height of the computer screen and the key board. 'cos bad ergonomics could result in sore backs and necks.
Hope that answers your question.

Cool answer: How can you work if you're facing such a view.

Actual answer: Screen visibility suffers from all that daylight. I actually have roll down blinds.

But hey, whenever it's time for a break, you can step out to this:

Thanks for the compliment. The ship's automation is very primitive compared to aircrafts. We only got electronic charts few years ago. In fact some ships still use paper charts. Tankers will go all electronic by the end of the year.

Actually it's the other way around. We have adopted a lot of procedures from the airline industry.

Thanks for the compliment but I think V. Narayan's post is the more deserving one.
Do make it a point to visit the next time we are in Mumbai and get your hands on the wheel.

Here is my Desk, pretty spartan actually,
Checking some of them here, I think I will spruce it up a little.

Re: What does your office desk/workstation look like?

I am envious of everyone here posting the pictures of their fixed base workstations. Must be a great feeling to work for 10 to 12 hours and then go back home to be with your family. Anyway, here are some pictures of my workstation, if I can call it that.

I couldn't find a wide angle image of the actual cockpit, so attached this one from a simulator. Both are almost similar.

It's American. I would be really surprised if it doesn't have a cupholder.

Re: What does your office desk/workstation look like?

Haha. Interesting thread.

Wish i was in Hyderabad. I could have posted 10-15 photographs of how my workstation changed in last thirty three years. One can see the transition from those round dial phone and desks with trays and files to how clutter free work places are now. Sometime later may be. But sharing two photographs.

My workstation from 2005-2008.

Re: What does your office desk/workstation look like?

Well, nice thread, something that we all spend time at and something that gives us the money to drive our love for cars
My workspace is super sad, period! There's nothing I can do. Have a decent chair and use my own personal laptop since the systems that were given to me at work were slow (Can't deal with that at all!).

Working in Digital Marketing - Social Media to be precise, I have the joy of working from home at times too. So below are the set-ups of where I work at, when I'm at home and what my desk at work looks like .

The 2 screen set-up at home is just so that there can be other stuff like series or iTunes going on, on one screen and work on the other.
