Try Nathaniels School. Its a very good place and Mr. Zachariah is one of the best keyboardists in our country.

(FYI - I am a keyboardist myself!)

any bhpian-nonbhpian willing to share his wealth of knowledge. does not have to be a formal trainer and we can find ways to honor their investment in time.

re: The Guitar Thread - Post all queries, tabs and info here

I have been playing my Yamaha C 40 every now and then. It has been almost about 3 years since I had this one. I would like to probably get a western guitar with a better sound quality. I was recommend by my music friends to go for the Seagull S6 Original. Seems like a good value for money for its price point. Has anyone got experience with this guitar? Are there any other alternatives that you recommend? I have some questions:

1. Is getting a used one recommended?

2. There are two variations of the Seagull S6 - The original and the Slim, the difference being the nut width - the slim version has a narrower nut width than the Original. Is this something to consider?

I would find the shorter nut a boon for my left hand.
In fact I find the fat neck of classical guitar to be a bit of trouble while holding the barres. I guess it is matter of personal choice rather than anything else.

re: The Guitar Thread - Post all queries, tabs and info here

I made good progress with my acoustic guitar thus far. Last year December I got myself a Taylor 114e and I have been using it to learn Chords, Chord changes, Strumming and some basic finger picking. I did make some good progress, but for the last couple of months, due to work related stress, I could not pick my guitar for practicing. I started getting into thy rhythm very slowly and I'm noticing for some strange reason that the action on the guitar is a bit on the higher side not to my liking. So the question is, should I do the adjustment by myself looking at some articles like this one:

https://www.wikihow.com/Lower-the-Ac...coustic-Guitar

Or should I rather take it to a proper service center to get it adjusted?

I wouldn't want to test my luthier skills on a Taylor. I'd suggest that you get it done by a professional.

Came across this thread today by some co-incidence.
I totally agree with jailbird on this, there is a world of difference between a DIY by following online material and what a skilled luthier can do. I have a 12 year old Granada and it has been to the luthiers twice till date, the most recent being last month - I am still awaiting its return.

What did you end up doing joe1980?

There are multiple trustworthy brands out there but a guitar is like a cricket bat. You want to hold a couple of them, feel the strings to see the best fit and comfort. Strings have varied gauges and hence some guitars feel like they're harder to play etc. Try and go to a nice shop.
That said, can't go wrong with a Yamaha

re: The Guitar Thread - Post all queries, tabs and info here

Calling all bass playing BHPians, I need some help.

Now that my exams are over, I started look into potential hobbies to keep me occupied in college. I've wanted to learn some musical instrument but lacked the interest or time to do so but I now have both

I (like many other people) wanted to get an electric guitar, I was this close to ordering a Jackson JS11 Dinky and a VOX Pathfinder 10 amp but then I got sucked into the world of bass, mostly thanks to two amazing bass players. One being Roman Ibramkhalilov of Jinjer and the other being Ryan Martine of Mudvayne.

I did some research and shortlisted 4 bass guitars to pick as potential starters but I wasn't able to decide between them, I asked around on a guitar discord server but they seemed to be more interested in electric guitars rather than bass.

These are the 4 models I've shortlisted (20,000 max budget):
  • ESP LTD B10 (Split coil + Single coil)
  • Schecter SGR C-4 (Twin Schecter diamond humbuckers)
  • Yamaha TRBX174 (Split coil + Single coil)
  • Ibanez GSR180 (Twin single coils)

I'm personally leaning towards to the Schecter as it looks the best. I mean you can't blame me, the company is called "Schecter Guitar Research" and the Satin finish and black chrome hardware look smashing. Posting pictures of all 4 guitars.

I've also decided to buy a USB audio interface like the M-Audio M-Track Solo or Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 instead of a bass amp.

re: The Guitar Thread - Post all queries, tabs and info here

My 14 year old son is taking online guitar lessons from a tutor for more than a year now. He loves playing it.

To move ahead what are the next steps ?

What are the certifications or exams available for him? I know it may be little early but wanted to know how to proceed.

Who conducts music exams and provides certifications?

Are the private learning institutes certified to conduct exams?

Sorry for many questions, but not having any idea in this field have put us in a spot.

The best certification would be his own certification. Let him enjoy what he is doing and don't make it another exam. I have learnt classical music for 18 years and I never needed a certification to enjoy it myself or to prove that I can sing. Get him a good coach/teacher who does it out of passion and that makes the difference.
