Got to withdraw some 100 Rs notes as we have a long trip scheduled tonight. Worried about the tolls.

The ICICI bank inside our campus had a long queue and they were only handing over 2000 Rs notes.
NHAI Tolls are free till tonight. ATMS were functional from yesterday. I withdrew 2000INR (all 100s) from the ATM inside our office campus. In the evening, the same ATM was opened and being loaded with new 500rupees but today the ATM is giving an error "cannot dispense" this is because of the new dimensions I guess and Banks are in the process of solving it and hence the delay.

I too received that sms from Axis Bank that ATMs will be operational from 11th. I visited six of them, all blinking invitingly from the road, but when the card was swiped..... "ATM services not available"

I guess banks are sending these sms to please finance ministry/RBI officials only.

My bad, the SMS was received by my phone at 11:18pm last night and I saw it this morning. So assumed it was 12th. Or maybe it was intended to mean the 12th, not sure.

The cash vans are filling cash into ATM only from today morning. When I went to ATM the cash van just arrived to fill the machine.

No new currencies. Only Rs 100 currency notes
Withdrawal limited to Rs 2000 per card.

None of the ATMs that I visited today are working. I tried at about 4 of them, different banks, but none of them seem to have been loaded with currency.Long lines expected at ATMs today.

2000 per card is known till I think the 20th when it becomes 4000. Of course they are still to start filling in 500 and 2000 notes. The latter may be a pain since you will get just One note for your 2000. Of course you can draw 10,000 cash from your account against a cheque. Here the limit is 10,000 per account per day with 20,000 a week maximum.

Just went to the bank and got a confirmation that ATMs in Trivandrum will start working by Monday

A moment of silence for those who were going praises over such a knee jerk decision by the PM, the level of unpreparedness simply amazes me.

2000 Rs notes would NOT be filled in ATMs...at least for now. The 1000Rs treys inside the ATMs have been replaced with 100Rs treys in most cases.

Sounds specific to your bank - which bank is this? I'm seeing both major Malayalam newspapers having front page headline that ATMs are working and cash is available.

And ATMs seem to be working in the financial capital ! Approached the first nearby ATM ( Saraswat bank ) and it worked very well with all 100 notes being dispensed. This is at Mulund West,Bombay.

Since you are having a long trip, can I suggest going to the bank and doing a withdrawal using cheque/exchange? Withdrawal up to 10k and exchange up to 4k (am sure you know)

It would be nice if our Indian Banks overseas branches made some arrangements for NRI's to get an opportunity to deposit this old Indian currency and change it.

Saying that, the amount of losses per se can't be too much, given the exchange rates of the Dollar, Pound, AUD, SGD and AED etc against the dear old Indian Rupee.

In reference to the other points - I see absolutely no reason why anyone needs to keep cash with them - even the Airport transfers can be handled simply by booking an online taxi in advance. Or just exchange a little money at the airport as soon as you land.
As per the Mumbai customs site, the maximum INR that can be taken out of India is Rs 7500 per person. Not sure if the limit has been increased recently or not.
