Pretty simple. They did not want to look like the thugs that they actually are. So they thought that if they propped up a kangaroo court and got him sentenced to death, the world will swallow it as a legitimate trial.

The only problem with this game plan was that they assumed people around the world to be as stupid as their leader.

Capturing him and making him go through the farce of a trial is good pubilicity for the US, especially when Bush is desperately short of justification for the disastrous Iraq war. But they didn't let him go to International court -- the trial was conducted by hand-picked pro-US Iraqis. Saddam knew too much about the underhand dealings of the US, which supported him for 8 years when Iraq was at war with Iran. He would undoubtedly have exposed the US by leaking out sensitive information had he been given a really open trial.

Whatever the reasons/drama/etc, Saddam deserved to be hanged for sure. The atrocities commited were crazier than most could think of.

Offcourse the US had no business to be in Iraq, but thats a whole different topic......
