1) Fiddle with the stereo
2) Try to see if someone is going ahead and about to scratch my car

While waiting at the signal, observe all the people around who are also waiting.
Some cutie struggling with a brand new Alto. Why do people suffer sitting on the transparent polyethylene covers?
A big ugly Force Trax with dented and scratched up sheetmetal.
That loud PMT bus. (Can those things be called buses at all?)
Looks like it hasn't been washed since the day it was delivered. The panels and seats and passengers' butts are all buzzing and vibrating.
Ah! A cyclist. He's trying to inch between two cars hoping he'll be clear before one or both move.
And wonder if Pune has any traffic cops at all. It's been a month since I've seen any at any traffic signal. No wonder Pune has no traffic discipline.
The light goes green, and we're off to the next signal!

interesting thread..

I observe the traffic police - their ways of accepting money, their way of treating people.. good fun to watch
Another thing - lookout for chicks (especially chicks in trouble with their vehicle) - if i find any without the famed 'terrorist' scarf wrapped over the face..

@Ram -- well said !! cant put it better than that..

Do most of the stuff others have mentioned. At times also try to chalk out in advance the most efficient way of getting through the traffic once the light turns green.

I try to see who I can sucker into having a pseudo drag race with.. that is if I'm first on the line.. keep revving up and inching forward... 99% of the times if I glance to either side I find a willing candidate.. then once the light turns green I just let em go like a bat outa hell.. and continue merrily and peacefully on my way..

ELF hope you hit the gold mine someday after digging through your nose .

1 - Look to my left and check if any weirdo is waiting to take a right when the signal turns green. Common in Bangy with the BMTC buses, cabbies and rickshaws.
2 - Check for any bikes in the RVM to see if he is too close to my car. Coz these dudes are capable having their bikes kiss my car's a$$ and leave that much unwanted scratch.
3 - Change CD's or play my fav' track.
4 - Last but not the least look around for chicks if my girl isnt with me.

Well, my policy is to drive in such a manner that does not make other road users brake due to my driving. That is how I differ from the auto drivers. Many road users at signals are very sluggish to get started and if I can cut lanes *quickly* without making the other lane user(s) brake, no problems with that. If they have to brake due to my lane cutting, I would consider that as bad driving. E.g. many times the guy next to you in the parallel lane may be in a heavy vehicle or an SUV/big sedan and may not have the space to get started; in such cases I can cut into their lanes and move ahead while they are still waiting. Of course all this jostling for space happens due to lane indiscipline and often causes jams. But then everybody has to realize that -- if you are the only person observing lane discipline, you will suffer.

I admit I am very impatient with sluggards who are inattentive at signals and take forever to get moving. Of course some characters drive painfully slowly, but spring to life when you try to cut into their lane and speed up to prevent that (with a lot of honking). I respect their sentiments, but when I overtake them a moment or two later I gesture to them, basically asking "Why?".

1. Change the radio station or CD
2. Keep a watch on Auto driver or a bike trying to squeeze in his vehicle in the near impossible space.
3. observe cars all around.
4. chicks walking or passing by...may be sitting in car or auto next to mine

3. Take a 360 degree view of wats happening around if there is some fight going on somewhere or some nice chicks in rickshaws or any other cars or check out for some nice lady drivers
