Guys..I called up MTNL people today, since I wasn't getting anything more than 60kbps download speeds on my so called "2 mbps" connection..
They told me that work is in progress on the upgradation to 2 Mbps on TriBand, and will be done "shortly"..!..so,they lied about getting 2Mbps from 1st Jan 2007 !!

The scheme is only valid for people with "download limits". The people on the unlimited bandwidth plan will not get any upgrades according to the bsnl site.

So is it necessary to call MTNL up to upgrade it to 2MBPS or will be done automatically for all download limited connections??

Anyone confirmed with the 2Mbps connection download speed?..I mean actual download speeds..because MTNL TriBand homepage speed tester shows my connection as 1800kbps,but my actual download speeds are only like 60kbps..(512kbps connection)..
so,my connection hasn't been upgraded as yet..
will have to call them again tomorrow.

I tried with my bsnl 256kbps connection.

On 1st january i got download speed of around 190KBps. After that its back to 30KBps from 2nd and today.

I checked it by downloading a 20mb file.

Just downloaded couple of big files from the following to check speed.

1> Team -BHP
2> Cnet Downloads
3> Tucows

Avg download speeds were 180-190kbps.

The download speed of 2 Mbps may not always be technically achievable. This speed is possible only for telephones close to the telephone exchange. As the distance increases, this speed will also decrease due to transmission loss. Also, if copper cable is old, or has lots of joints, speed will be impacted.

Secondly, this speed is applicable between MTNL server and your computer. Just as the modem connects to the computer at 100 Mbps through the LAN cable. Speed is only as good as the weakest link, which even might be load on server from where download is happening and generally the volume of internet traffic.
