The only way to ride faster on MTB is by changing tyres to hybrid ones.
My bike had 26*2.1 button tyres, on switching to thinner 1.75 with smooth profile my average speed increased by 2-3kmph.

Re: The Bicycles thread

I have been visiting this thread very regularly in the last 6 months or so. Looking to get a road bike soon. Have recently completed a couple of 100k's on my Firefox MTB and would like to get something more suited to road usage and relegate MTB only for off-road trail rides.

Have shortlisted Triban RC500 and 2021 Scott Speedster 30. Triban is supposedly coming back in stock later this month and Scott is taking deposits for January - February deliveries.

One dealer in Gurgaon has this one Scott in stock. He offered this 2018 Speedster 20 (Tiagra) for 65K. Frame size was XS (50cm) though. My height is 172 cm. i feel I would be better suited in a 52 cm frame. Can someone point me to some good resources on how to choose the right frame size please.

On their page, if you choose a model, there is a link to "Find Your size". You get the following image.

(The image is not high res for me, so wont upload here just copy paste removing spaces)

Scott India site -

https://scott.sportnetwork.in/
But that particular model does not appear on the site. They have launched 2021 models too.

Bike Fit is the answer. Scott technology centers have them.
Check if you can get Bike Fit done by someone else in your City.

50 cm Effective Top Tube length is be very much suitable for your height. You can always go for a slightly longer stem if needed. You won't get a 2021 Tiagra model for 65k.

Re: The Bicycles thread

Looking for Road Bike Recommendations in 40-60K range. I found only the following options.

Triban 500
Ridley Damocles 1
Montra
Firefox

Canondale, Trek are in the 60-70K range

Bikes with Disc brakes are expensive. Only Triban 500 has disc brakes in this range. Appreciate all suggestions and feedback. I am currently using a Hybrid for the last 5 years and want an upgrade to a road bike.

Triban RC500 is a fantastic bike for 55k. As per my last correspondence with Decathlon this week, stocks are expected end of January. Consider the Scott Speedster 30 (2021) for 60-65k. Same Shimano Sora configuration but minus disc brakes. Would suggest avoiding Firefox and Montra in this range. A guy in my bike group lucked out and got a Cannondale Optimo (2019) with Sora and with disc brakes for 72k. Trek and Cannondale Sora equivalents are priced higher than Scott, Triban from what I have gathered and these two brands are generally considered to be one notch higher.

She has never ridden one before. She has outgrown her earlier bike without riding it for a cumulative of 10 hours. So we hope to teach her on this new bike - it will need to have balancing wheels to begin with.
We ended up buying a 20 inch bike from Decathalon for 6k + accessories. While 24 inch would have been more future proof, but she was more comfortable on the smaller one so we picked that one up.

Now comes the tough part... she is scared and I am impatient.

This is with a bone stock Merida Reacto 400 2017 including stock Dolomites tyres (sans the saddle) . But more importantly about 100 odd hours of bike specific training over last 5 months.
Kudos! that's some great numbers. and congratulations too.

BTW do you use a power meter and if yes, which one?

That's great news. A friend of mine is riding the wheels off his newly acquired Triban 100, and is already itching to upgrade.

Value for price wise though, the even more fantastic buy would be the RC520 with the latest gen Shimano 105 drivetrain in under 80k.

Tubeless ready wheelset. Dual mechanically operated hydraulic piston disc brakes.

All of these new gen RC series Tribans come with 28c puncture protect tyres stock (and can take up till 36c tyres). So you are gravel and all-terrain ready.

Cheers, Doc

Re: The Bicycles thread

Anyone taking part in the Rapha Festive 500 this year? It started today.

In 2019, despite a knee injury sustained in early December, I managed to complete it successfully. So, this year it shouldn't be difficult for me. One thing to note. Rapha isn't giving a roundel to finishers this year.

Here's the roundel I won for the 2019 edition.

Wow! I never knew you actually get physical stuff for these Strava challenges.

That's a bummer about this year though.

These Rapha and Le Col challenges, the $50 off on your next purchase type prizes are useless to us in India and I suck lifelong at the lucky draws.

Do keep us updated of any challenges with similar physical give-aways. Even a certificate (on paper) is worth the effort.

As you know such medal/certificate challenges are a dime a dozen in most cities now. The catch being the entry fee ... which to me personally is akin to the BRM style of "buy a medal" ... no fun in that. (I wanted a rolling eyes sardonic smiley here to more aptly capture what I thought of the whole scam lol)

Cheers, Doc

Life teaches me that the real challenge lies in excelling and surpassing oneself.

But I do recall seeing a firefox challenge on FB.

A medal to hang on the wall or in your trophy case would still be nice.

Virtual medals are like digital photographs.
