Thank you so very much Shifu. Agree with you on 'being comfortable' part. The bike affair people looks like genuine ones. I will get one from them.

Re: The Bicycles thread

I picked up a Bianchi Via Nirone 7, . This is an entry level Road Bike with the most basic groupset (Shimano 2300). I have replaced the stock Hutchinson tyres with Vittoria's. Other additions are a Sigma Bike Computer with a wireless speed/distance sensor and cadence sensor, Front and Rear Lights, Original Bianchi Saddle bag, Parktool Toolkit, Helmet and of course some cycling apparel.

At last I have done the trip. A total of 257 Kms, the plan was to ride to Stockholm, camp for the night and head back the next day.

My aim was to average around 20 kmph. Saw many videos on how to prepare for long rides. Like this one.

My onward journey was tough as I broke the important rule, to starting off slowly and gradually increase the pace. I was trying to keep up with my mate, who was obviously way faster and because of that I had to take a lot of breaks.

Onward Journey.

Distance - 125 Km
Average Speed - 21.1 Kmph
Ride time - 5:55 hours
Elapsed time - 9:30 hour

Had an awesome time in Stockholm, camped in the park and this is what I woke up to.

Then we went to Vasa museum, It is truly remarkable. To see a ship from 1628 in its old glory. More details about the museum in the following link.

For the return journey, I started very slowly keeping my heart rate between 150 to 160 bpm. I made a conscious effort to stick to this as my onward journey was very tough on me and I was very weak toward the end. More over I didn't get a good sleep, hardly slept for four hours.

Return Journey.

Distance - 131 Km
Average Speed - 20.2 Kmph
Ride time - 6:30 hours
Elapsed time - 8:15 hour

Total calories burned : 11.273 Kcal as per Sigma.

We started from Stockholm after having lunch, so didn't take the lunch break like the onward journey. My average speed was below 20 Kmph for most of the return leg, my friend had to wait for me for almost 45 minutes(total) so that I can catch up with him. The last 31 kms was fun, it was getting dark and we didn't have proper headlights, so I decided to draft behind my friend and asked him to ride at my pace. We dispatched the distance in 1:15 ish hours with a 5 minute break thrown in between.

Question for you guys.

I was carrying a backpack about 6ish Kg and a sleeping bag 1.5 kg, how much do you think this will effect the average speed. I just want your thoughts.

May be I have to find out myself with out the extra luggage .

Re: The Bicycles thread

Backpacks (or the lack of it) make a big difference IMO and should be experienced to understand it. Have you looked at installing a rack to and fixing the your bag to it?

Here's something that should work if your (most roadbikes) bicycle doesn't have eyelets: http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/produc...ck-_-pp_100016

Picked up a Rockrider TT 300 men(formerly 5.0) from Decathlon, Pune on 15th Aug, Enjoying the rides so far.

Fellow BHPians in/around Viman Nagar , we can catch-up for early morning / weekend rides . It is more fun to ride along with friends / like minded people.

Thanks. Unfortunately I can't post pictures as the net is slow on board. I have 2 threads lying in the assembly line which I am unable to complete due to pictures not getting uploaded. Surprisingly I was able to upload pictures on some other forums. Let me search the threads on some cycling forums I had posted on and copy the links. Otherwise you will have to wait till I get home.

It is not just the weight, but how you carry it also greatly affects your speed, stamina, breaks etc. When you carry 7.5kg weight on your back, it puts lot of strain on your core, back and shoulders. Longer the time, the higher the strain. This will result in not only reduction in speed, but the need to take frequent breaks to relieve the stress on the back. Cycling with backpack is ok for short rides less than an hour - like office commute. But for a 125+ km ride, a back pack is a definite NO. It is not just the speed that is of concern, but you also risk injury.

For cycling and overnight camping, a rack and/or pannier is a must. Invest in a good rack and pannier and you will see the difference in the ride.

Keep up with those awesome rides

Re: The Bicycles thread

Planning a cycle trip covering western ghats and reach coastal by end of the trip. Idea is to cover around 120-130kms a day for 4 days.

Planning to start the ride from Hassan. Current plan is

Day 1 - Hassan to Kalasa
Day 2 - Kalasa to Thirthahalli
Day 3 - Thirthahalli to Sagar
Day 4 - Sagar to Udupi

Has anyone done this route? If you have any alternatives, please suggest.

Re: The Bicycles thread

Planning to take up cycling again.. want to go for mountain (1st choice) or hybrid bike. Finalized some models of Giant and Canondale.

I checked with RR cycles, Marathalli but they dont have the models i am looking for. I will be visiting Giant store in Indiranagar this weekend.

Require some suggestions for Canondale stores in Blr (preferred) or Hyd.

Also some bike model suggestions in 35-40k range.

For the budget you have, you will have lot of options. You can try Cadence90 in Jayanagar for Cannondale, Giant and Marin Bikes.
