Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

I think England will be the team to beat this world cup, other than Australia being the eternal favorites.

West Indies can spoil their fun if they reach Knock outs, so can India if we get lucky in the knockouts.

  • Amla is inconsistent for the past 18 months. Don't see the hunger in him anymore
  • van der Dussen is relatively new and inexperienced
  • Markram has the ability but is just finding his feet
  • It's been ages since I've seen a noticeable innings from Duminy
  • Why didn't Miller play?
Agreed.
Though I would like SA to keep up their braindead batting performance on 5th June as well

England are solid but not invincible. Barring Archer I dont see any threat from their bowling line up. That is their weakness.

This was SA's game to lose and lose did they! I remember at half time talking to friends who said SA will choke and lose and boy did they turn out to be correct.
Eng bowled and fielded magnificently taking some breath taking catches. They are the team to beat

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Don't think SA had much of a chance even when they were 100 off for 2. Their batting doesn't inspire much confidence. De Kock wasn't his usual self in the first 10 overs because England bowled well. Markram is the equivalent of KL Rahul from our team. He has a lot of promise/potential but not a great record at present.

England has more than a decent bowling attack with the inclusion of Archer now. As per the stats, Plunkett has picked up the most number of wickets in the middle overs in the last couple of years. Stokes only came in to bowl after the 35th over mark.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

My prediction on SA team: They will not make into semis. There are so many better teams this time.
Reason: Agree that their bowling is decent with Rabada and Tahir. But their batting is in shambles. Since ABD retired, they do not have a single match winner when it comes to batting. Amla has already past his prime, Markam is stil WIP, DeCock is 'hit or miss', Duminy is dud. Miller - he always divides the opinion of the public. If he is in the team, people question why he has been picked. And when he is left out (like yesterday), same set of people thinks that he would have made a difference if he has played! The only player who is consistent is DuPlessis. But I don't think he can win a match when team needs something like 200+ in 30 overs.
Enough of ranting on SA team! Now, eagerly waiting for today's match

Good analysis and I agree with you.
IMO these will be semifinalists-

England - Complete unit in all departments. Bats too deep.
Australia - When it comes to world cups they are on a different level.
India - Experience, Dhoni calmness and Kohli aggression will take us deep. Only concern is form of openers. Bumrah maybe our MVP.
West Indies - Explosive batting unit and quite decent bowlers. They are the underdogs who can surprise anyone underestimating them.

NZ is good but they dont have a good bowling line up and barring Williamson and Taylor there batting is too shaky.

SA we all know will choke whenever needed.

Pakistan will self destruct sooner or later as usual. They have lost 10 of their last ODI's so no great form too.

Sri Lanks is hopeless with not a single match winner.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan may give a surprise or 2 but they are still way below than top teams in calibre.

Today's West Indies Vs Pak match will be interesting - both promising teams in the world cup this time with West Indies on a resurgent spike of sorts recently and Pakistan the unpredictable geniuses as always.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Pakistan in deep trouble at 81/8. Undone by excellent short deliveries. The West Indian bowlers have been executing their plans to perfection. Seems none of the Pakistani batsmen have the technique to negotiate through.

Which reminds me, *shudder to think* how are our batsmen going to fare in such conditions and aggressive bowling.

Update: And they have folded for 105. Wahab with a counter attacking cameo at the end.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Pak 93/9
This match seems like a goner.

Pak had scored 74 all out Vs England in the 1992 world cup, but luckily it was a no result game due to bad weather (they eventually went on to win the cup in that edition) - that's probably something they can derive some encouragement from and boost their morale.

Edit:Pak 105 all out!

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Sri Lanka in tatters at 114-8 Vs New Zealand .

Looks like we're in for a world cup with a few low scoring games!
Captain Karunaratne is still standing tall on 42 not out

The short ball is being put to good use, saw that yesterday in the West Indies-Pak game and again today in this game. I hope Indian batsmen will be able to handle these, we all know some of our batsmen have a generic weakness when handling the short ball, fingers crossed!

Edit:Sri Lanka 136 all out!

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Another Asian side getting rolled over by a quality fast bowling unit. To be honest, most of the Pakistani and now Sri Lankan batsmen have imploded. Apart from one or two, none of the other batsmen have shown any determination to stay and apply themselves. Credit also to the respective bowling attacks for sticking to a plan and forcing mistakes.

Hopefully these matches act as a stark reminder to India about what they can expect especially against such fierce pace attack. If T20 mindset prevails and our batsmen resort to senseless stroke play, then we are doomed.

Also refreshing to see bowlers dominate the scene. The recent ODI series' and T20 events, all producing high and fast scoring games, were a nightmare to them. So these pitches and their performances are a breath of fresh air.

Yet another one sided game this world cup, third match in a row with New Zealand defeating Sri Lanka.

One might be excused for thinking that this is the T20 WC. That's how the last two games have panned out.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Nz annihilates SL as expected..
Afghanis struggling against Aus as expected..
This world cup has been quite one sided and boring till now..

Seems till India vs SA match there won't be any exciting games.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

It wasn't surprising that Australia beat Afghanistan quite comprehensively but credit to the Afghans they batted almost 40 overs and got to 200+, at least it left something for the bowlers. It wasn't a completely meek surrender.
Today, South Africa play Bangladesh, let's see how this one goes
