Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

A player is allowed to aggravate his injury by umpires, how is this different from getting injured during the game? Who checks the genuinity of these injuries?

Aggrevating an injury is is not counted as a new injury and no substitution is allowed. Logic is that the team is taking an informed decision and is well aware of the repercussions also. Andre Russel and his knees fall in this category.

Who checks ? If it is a replacement situation, I know for a fact that

1- Board president & coach give it in writing
2- An independent assessment by an ICC doctor.

In the case of Dale Steyn, Cricket SA had to prove that the injury to Steyn that ultimately ruled him out was different from the one he was carrying when he was selected and missed a couple of matches. Had it been the same injury, replacement would have been tougher if not impossible.

During the course of the match, an external injury is allowed a replacement. But if Russel had complained of dizziness, for example, he may have been allowed to go off but that would have been cheating. I am sure there would be a process in place to prevent it.

Thanks Eddy, we are lucky in our life that sick leaves are allowed irrespective of where and when you fall sick. On humanitarian grounds they should allow replacement, if a player suffers an irreversible injury, his life is at stake. The captain should be reprimanded in this scenario is my thought.

Yes, it should happen till the time it becomes obvious that teams are taking advantage of this rule and replacing a bad fielder with an excellent one.

Just like it happened with a runner - teams starting misusing it and it was banned.

Here's an angry rant from a fan who talks about the many matches that are getting rained out.

In other news, Morgan just hit a century of sixes. Insane hitting. England making a statement here.

EJG Morgan c Rahmat Shah b Gulbadin Naib 148 (71b 4x4 17x6) SR: 208.45

England have had a feast and made Afghanistan bowling mincemeat, 397/6 narrowly missed 400!

Morgan's strike rate was 208 and Moeen Ali's 344

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Russell's fielding episode is interesting actually. I think eventually ICC should have a rule where fielders cannot be replaced unless its an obvious injury during the game. Or even if someone has to go off, he can only go off for a limited amount of time, in order to prevent teams replacing their slow fielders.
It is just not fair to add a fielder like Jadeja for say someone like Jadhav. Too tired to field? Okay, go off and the team continues with 10 players on the park. Might lead to weeding out the bad fielders in the game but will surely make it a bit more of an even contest.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

That's my concern, if Russell was really struggling with a pain, it is ridiculous how the rules was taking a toll on him. What is that ICC trying to achieve here by putting a player's life at risk? What does the rules say if a fielder with an excessively taped finger breaks a bone while playing the match? The whole idea of substitution should be scrapped if the existing rules can cause life threatening injury to a player.

I doubt if umpires/rules forced him to take the field. WI could have continued with the 10 players, but it was WI, or in all probability, Russel himself who decided to take the field. Cannot blame the umpires or the rules for this.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the world cup and Pant now replaces him officially - bad luck for him to have sustained this kind of injury when he was really doing well.

In other news, South Africa ended their inning on 241/6 in their 49 (shortened game) overs. I think this could be about 20-30 short of a par score, but let's see how the Kiwis chase this down, after some easy matches South Africa is a tougher opponent for them (their game against India was washed out and they shared a point).

And there is a Twitter war going on

Iceland Cricket posted this -

Quote:
We’ve just heard that Rashid Khan has scored Afghanistan’s first century of the #CWC19! Wow! 110 from 56 balls. The most runs ever scored by a bowler in the World Cup or something. Well batted young man. #ENGvAFG #AFGvENG
There was immediate backlash from players and fans alike, citing disrespect.

Cricket Iceland responded with poll

That's when I realised that they have always posted such humorous tweets. Let's see where this one goes.

PS: Rashid Khan - I think he has been found out. Most of his IPL wickets this time were tailenders / not important. It will be hard to come back from this magnitude of thrashing.

PS2: There is NO WAY that he is 20 years old. Looks 30 at least. I think there is an interview where he says that his earliest memory of cricket was Imran lifting the cup in 1992, lol.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Tahir's last over was full of drama with 2 difficult dropped chances by Miller and the last ball Williamson was actually out caught behind but the South Africans didn't appeal nor use the DRS - This could be a costly miss if New Zealand go on to win this game.

Edit:another run out chance messed up and Williamson survives! South Africa are jinxed.

And now Miller misses a run out. He's had a horrible cup in the field.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

What's up with South Africa? They just want to go home, is it? There was a time when they were the pioneers when it came to fitness/fielding & India had a bunch of lazy fielders. Now it's the other way roiund. Painful to watch them on field. New Zealand didn't win this one, SA made them win.

Kane Williamson, take a bow. A true captain's knock
