This is pretty ridiculous. The score that NZ took almost 40 overs to reach, India has to reach in 20. DLS method actually penalizes a good bowling side, right?

Pretty entertaining conversations during the rain break with VVS & Ganguly with Mayanti. Ganguly being his real self.

Yes exactly what I said a few days ago. DLS is a flawed method. High time ICC thinks to revamp this age old calculation.

From cricbuzz:

20:30 IST: Right, the rain has gotten lighter and it's a lot more brighter. The super-soppers are doing their work. We will start losing overs from 4:31 pm local

EDIT: Cricinfo says 4.01 pm, factoring in the lunch break. So we are already losing overs.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

I don't understand the kind of stupidity that makes chasing team score 237 in 40 overs when the side batting first scored only 211 in 46 overs!!

What happens if India scores 230 and loses? Is it not absurd that you loose despite scoring more runs than your opponents in less number of overs ??
It has happened in past and yet no one has the sense to question this calculation?

At the beginning of the match, had NZ knew the match would be only for 46 overs, they would have paced their innings differently. Another factor is India know the overs available to them is 46 and not 50. Hence after accounting for these factors, 237 is the number.

The DLS mathematical model accounts for the assumption of underlined words.

Again, if NZ knew the match was only for 20 overs, they would have paced their innings differently. For India, instead of batting whole 50 overs, 148 in 20 overs is reasonable total. For me +/- few runs, it seems fair for both sides.

PS: Of course the DLS doesn't account for individual strength of bowlers & batsmen. Burmah and 1.5 overs left and would have difficult to score off. But DLS considers that 3.5 overs were left in NZ innings and not who would bowl those overs.

The only thing that DLS does not account for is that 2 of the remaining overs were to be bowled by daddy Bumrah.

.
Do you realise there is a possibility they end up with 236 - 240 in 50 overs?

And what about India scoring 220 in 40 overs and losing the match when NZ only scored 211 in their 46 overs?

Mostly it looks like NZ will end at 240 thereabout. You mean to say 240 in 50 overs is equivalent to 223 in 40?

I for sure don't understand that calculation!!

And with the kind of start they had, they would have struggled to get 130 in 20 overs if this was a t20. They would have simply ended up losing 5 wickets inside the 6 overs had the game been a t20.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Seems we're close to getting the game deferred till tomorrow. Its still raining , so there's no way match will start before 11pm IST which is cut off time for 20 over game.

What's the forecast for tomorrow? They're somewhat accurate there but today they turned out inaccurate i guess.
I wonder if i should apply for additional leave tomorrow or a half day!

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

It has stopped raining. Looks like we will get a 20-20 game, subject to a final inspection at 2245 hours. Damn !! The weather Gods are against us it seems.

Edit:

22:21 IST: Okay, it's raining again. The covers are back. You've been seeing it all along, you better get the trend.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

New Zealand have been quite lucky and this time probably the rain has descended as their lucky charm. Even in the 2015 semi final it was rain that helped them.
A shortened game today will definitely help New Zealand, just hope instead it will continue tomorrow from where it was interrupted by rain today.

Edit:22:54 IST
Play has been called off today and match will continue tomorrow

Called off for today. NZ has to resume at 211/5 tomorrow, provided we have good weather. Suits us perfectly. Full game tomorrow.

Dodged a bullet.

Nonsense rules. Nonsense weather and world cup scheduling.

All the best guys for tomorrow.

Nonsense decision to leave Shami out. Some decisions really leave me open mouthed in disbelief.

Cheers, Doc

Btw, the twitter war between Sanjay Manrekar and Michael Vaughan has escalated. Vaughan taunted Manjrekar after Jadeja's good performance with the ball and Manjrekar retaliated by blocking him.

And the Indian junta is supporting the Englishman

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Ganguly on the post-innings show wanted the match to finish today (though he didn't expect it to be a t20 like it threatened to be) as he was expecting the pitch to get a lot slower considering it would remain under covers until play resumes tomorrow and if NZ somehow manage 240-245 roundabouts, it could get very tricky for India.

Everyone else seems quite happy with India playing the full 50 overs tomorrow, in which case I feel 250 shouldn't be a problem if someone like Rohit in his sublime form bats long.
