Well deserved victory for New Zealand. Outstanding effort from Jadeja. Overall a good game. Hoping for New Zealand to win the Cup.

Heartbroken! The poor batting display of middle order throughout the tournament meant that only the top order had to fail to lose a match where the target was as low as 240.
Honestly never thought that India would lose to NZ here, but they came out better.

Good match, Good Ravindra Jadeja, well bowled India & poor batting. I think we have seen MSD for the last time in blue.

Wow, guess NZ did really play a very gritty game. No hype, no drama just plain old holding the fort, Dravid style game.

I am certainly rooting for NZ in the finals and hope they win over England.

Agree... I had this premonition that we would struggle , all match winning superstitions ( no changing seats, spouse sitting on the table ...) in our house was thrown out of the window and into the Bangalore breeze

Sorry but why should NZ win the tournament? They have been the weakest and most inconsistent among the semi finalists. Its England who deserves to win and even aussies for showing gumption when everyone has written them off before tournament started.

I want NZ to win because they are the underdogs and I don't like either Eng or Aus. Simple logic.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Man, what a match!! 21/4 was too much to climb out of. We should have had the 100+ partnership for the 4th or 5th wicket, 7th wicket was too late.

Was this Jadeja's best ODI performance ever? I'm not sure if he was carrying the Manjrekar incident to the field today. After the sword-swinging celebration after reaching his 50, he looked up somewhere and made a gesture - Commentators' box?

This must have been MSD's last ODI. I wished he'd have dived! However in his defense, Latham wasn't at the stumps and I'm sure Dhoni wouldn't have imagined that Guptill would hit the stumps from there!! It was emotional watching him walk off the field.

I don't think Australia are such easy pushovers, after today's events an Aus victory over England is certainly much more possible and I'm hoping for that, I don't like England for many reasons. Reminds me of today's paper article where Ravi Shastri, the godfather proudly spoke about needing luck in the finals with England, a few hours later now, I bet he feels like a fool. His mentee/protege Kohli screwed him over lol.

Now coming to my post on cricket, I'm actually a bit relieved that the madness is over, today it seemed like almost all the Indians were possessed by the game, tuning in to their smartphones, televisions and radio to know the result, me, I couldn't care any less if I tried.

Yes like everyone else I was raised to be a cricket fan and to watch the game, but with one minor difference, I enjoy a good game be it of any two team, the game certainly is boring 99% of the time but like in today's game, 1% of the time it makes you feel alive like never before.. its propensity to thrill lies in the true fighting spirit of the game and while I'm not the greatest fan of Dhoni, I consider him to be the scariest Indian batsman to have ever walked the pitch, all-time. His clutch nature, his below-freezing mind (unlike the hotheaded, abusing, bearded captain we have now), his calculating nature and powerful swing have won more games than any batsman of the country combined.. today I believe it is his last game and India will have much lesser chances to win a world cup over the next decade for sure. The current lot of arrogant hot-heads don't stand a chance.

The Indian fans should know where to draw a line, just like my cousins who turn off the set and walk away if India is losing, they were actually praying for rain to pull off a finals qualification.. this is not in the spirit of any game.. as a sportsman (collegiate) myself, I think victories should be earned by sweat and tears, not handed out by rain. It is this hyper-fanaticism and worship of players as not demi-gods but meta-gods that has slowly turned me away from the game.

I do fondly remember as a kid watching the golden age of Indian cricket (in the mid-late 90's) as a tiny kid.. the simpler times where players actually slogged to win a game. Today the players are certainly more skilled and athletic and far more tactical, but the trillions of rupees they earn during the IPL and other so called exciting matches, has killed their sportsmanship and tactical abilities in the one-day and test matches which are the real forms of cricket.

If Dhoni retires today, an era has officially ended.. the last of the somewhat old-schoolers has left the building. Let's just watch the remaining 2 games and have fun doing so, shall we?

Its too late now, and no point crying.

NZ won by 18 runs.

India gave them 18 freebies and many overthrows.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Once we were 5/3, the writing was on the wall! It was a phenomenal effort to get close i felt & go down fighting instead of a humiliating defeat which many anticipated after the early setbacks.

Pitch under covers since yesterday really helped the Kiwis & that proved to be the downfall for us.

Toss although uncontrollable proved to be critical in the end. Williamson/Taylor played smart.

Many forgetting India only has a 27% win percentage against NZ in ICC tournaments. Now we should get back to winning bilateral tournaments & plan for the T20 WC next year.

MSD hardly ever dives. Him getting run-out is a rarity. I think he got run-out in the IPL Final as well a few months back!

I was perplexed to see Dhoni bat so low. Do not know why he was being shielded ! At 3 down, Dhoni should have walked out to bat since he has a better defensive technique. Needed the likes of Pandya to bat after the 30th over. That Matt Henry's last over put enormous pressure on Jadeja to get the big hits away. Dhoni as usual left it too late.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Batting MSD that late was a horrible horrible decision. Eventually came back to bite us. And I fully expected India's world beating uber talented batsmen to fail when it mattered. Good Job Guys!

I feel so so bad right now. I am in office and need a room to shout.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Back to drawing board. India needs specialist odi batsmen. These pants, pandyas are great for T20s or last 10 overs, but can't expect them to build innings over 30-40 overs. India's Achilles heel(middle order) got exposed today and how, in an all important semifinal knock out world cup match . Too much of T20s(IPL) has made these new generation cricketers hot headed and everyone is a good hitter but they seem to lack a level head of yesteryears' cricketers. Hope things fall in place hereon.

Was waiting for the news on dhoni's retirement, but looks like he will get a farewell match. End of an era. He had a great career. 350 matches, 10 centuries, 50+ avg, numerous dismissals behind the stumps. A World Cup win would have been perfect farewell but alas!!! That wasn't to be. Wish him all the luck for his future. He was one of the reasons for our generation to celebrate a world cup victory (2011).

Absolutely! A lot of needless runs with misses and overthrows meant India easily gifted 20+ runs to NZ in their total of 239 and those runs proved just too costly in the end.

For too long now (3 decades or so) India has been touted as having a strong batting lineup and it's that same batting that has collapsed many a time especially in crucial/big games, they were even called "Paper Tigers" in the late 80s/90s, cut to 2019 and yet again batting was their nemesis today.

Remember the 120/8 Vs Sri Lanka in the 1996 world cup semi final ?

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019

Is it a mental issue I wonder ? Knocked out in the 2015 world cup and now 2019 after pretty much being league stage toppers.. I wouldn't consider 2017 Champions trophy final since there was a lot happening in the dressing room.

India were a tad bit unlucky to lose Dhawan to injury, but 240 on this pitch was certainly gettable, if only the top order played out the first 10 overs without losing a wicket or showing too much "intent". Alas! that wasn't to be.

It was an excellent decision, we reached this close only because he did not get a chance to play as many balls to score dots. Pant and Pandya stabilized the innings but eventually succumbed to the pressure.

I believe MS Dhoni should now hang up his boots for some young blood, and instead of Karthik, Pant and Pandya at No 4, we need a proper batsman like a Ross Taylor at No.4. No more wicketkeepers please!
