Re: The Foreign (non-English) Movies thread (no spoilers please)

Dheepan even though primarily in Tamil, finds a mention in this thread as it's a French (Canal +) production and depicts the life of a Tamil eelam soldier who finds refuge in France along with two other war refugees from Sri Lanka posing as his wife and daughter. Powerful performances from the cast as they depict their tribulations in fleeing a war zone to find some semblance of normalcy.

This film won the Palme d'or in the 2015 Cannes film festival. Available on Netflix india

The Train to Busan [Korean ; Available on Amazon Prime]

Well choreographed 2 hour action thriller. The movie, made in 2016, is probably too close to comfort now . Characters are well-etched. The acting is understated with no horror screaming and the heroism has no over the top dialogues. Just a bunch of ordinary people in an extraordinary terrifying situation.

Memories of Murder:
Had high expectations but the movie did not end up matching them.

Had zero expectations and turned out to be pleasantly surprised

Ran (Japan 1985):

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089881/

"In Medieval Japan, an elderly warlord retires, handing over his empire to his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other...and him."

What an epic by Akira Kurosawa. The visuals, the acting, the amazing way he captures the king's descent into madness.

4.5/5! A Sunday afternoon well spent

Re: The Foreign (non-English) Movies thread (no spoilers please)

Quick, 2019, Swedish

The movie is about a series of meetings between an investigative journalist Hannes Rastam and a serial killer Thomas Quick that takes place in a mental hospital where he is incarcerated. He is convicted of 8 murders and confessed to have killed many more people.
The conversations and the parallel investigation and flashbacks delve into the mind of a "psycho" while he "explains" his modus operandi in each of the murders he was convicted for.
The violence is limited to few photographs that flash few times and few blink-and-you'll-miss scenes.
The bizarre thing about the move is its a real story that shook Sweden.
You can watch it on Prime. Go for it!

Squid Game (Korean, English dubbed): 4 / 5

This is actually a series (1st season) but the construct and flow is quite fast paced with a movie type story construct hence posting here. Quite an innovative construct - a large bunch of nobodies are invited to participate in an dark-tone Takeshi Castle kind of closed game show environment. All participants have huge debts so the big ticket winnings is a sureshot attraction, even at the risk of losing their lives in the game show. And that's how the show proceeds.

Extremely fast paced except for the un-necessary banter and sideline conversations (one can easily fast forward through them without missing any core aspects). The last episode has an interesting twist

Sinkhole - Korean

The Foreign (non-English) Movies thread (no spoilers please)-mv5bmtbjndrmntktywy1ny_.jpg

I didn't expect it to be good when I realized it was a survival movie especially the "comedy" genre that they had associated with it. Yes, there may be few things that are technically not possible or overly done but ignore all those.

Rating - 4/5

Brilliant movie. This is more subtle and carries a slow pace but super interesting unlike Drishyam 1 and 2(which was adapted from this). Like the core purpose of the movie which is not the murder but the alibi.

Omar (2013) Arabic

It's movies like these which make a Netflix subscription worthwhile. It's about a Palestinian youth who often give the Israeli forces the slip to pursue his love interest, who lives on the other side of the wall. The movie ends with a great twist in the tale.

It won the best foreign film Oscar in its year I believe

Is this based on the novel, the Devotion of Suspect X? If so, I need to watch it!

Where did you watch it?

I also want to watch "Rashomon" since long. There is a print on YouTube but it is very poor. Is there a digitally remastered print available?

I watched it on a 3rd party streaming service. It's neither legal (they have all the latest movies/series) nor blacklisted unlike other streaming providers. Will DM.

It is a brilliant brilliant movie indeed.

Movies from the middle east, especially from Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Jordan have something that steals the heart.
Do try 'The Insult' from Lebanon and 'Lemon Tree' from Israel too.

And if you loved Omar then try the series Fauda too. It is epic.

Re: The Foreign (non-English) Movies thread (no spoilers please)

Stumbled onto another gem of a movie on Netflix.

Wadjda - story of a small school going girl growing up in Saudi Arabia and her pluck and resistance to conventional mores of an ultra conservative society. The performance of the child actor left a mark on us. My daughter loved the movie and so did we.
