CC: Insert the floppy disk into the slot and close the door.
User: (inserts the floppy, gets up, walks to the room door and closes it) I have done as per your instruction, what next?

Re: Remember when.....

- Remember when it was OK to smoke inside your own home without being labelled a bad parent? (my uncle did this all the time and it never occurred to anyone to tell him to stop!)
- Remember when a good Dad was one who held a steady job, signed the report cards twice a year and just about remembered which class the kids were in (my kid desn't know how lucky she is )
- Remember when a house cost under a lakh? (I do. The 2BHK we bought in suburban Mumbai cost about that in 1980. Now...don't ask)

The 5.25" drives had an optical write protect - the LED used to get get clogged with dust and the PC would not write onto floppies. It was only with the advent of the 3.5" / 1.44Mb FD's that this got changed to a physical write protect.

Did you ever try the floppy copy protection scheme based on a punched hole and it's 'unreadable' sector?

Re: Remember when.....

Remember opening the side cowl and opening-cleaning the spark plug with a cloth and a piece of wire of a 2 stroke scooter stranded on the road side.

Remember the customary Tilting required before kicking the scooter to start "most common with bajaj scooters and funnily called the BAJAJ TECHNOLOGY"

But which model. The 8" floppy puzzles me.

Stinginess with bytes was ingrained in us. Tight coding (imagine 64KB max. binary to fit in an EPROM) was a thing to be proud of.
Tried making your own programmer for the 25xx family (not 27xx)!

To add to the 'do you remember' theme, do you remember the time when the 6116 superseded the 2114. (I wonder how many will get it)

Re: Remember when.....

  • Remember waiting with bated breath every Wednesday evening for Ameen Sayani on Binaca Geetmala on Radio Ceylon?
  • Remember Eric Fernando's 'Choice of the People' on Srilanka Broadcasting Corporation radio everyday?
  • Remember dimming / dipping your headlights with your foot on your Amby?
  • Remember looking at your car battery's charge on the display on the dash?
  • Remember signalling for your turns by flicking the lever atop the horn at the centre of the Amby?
  • Remember using your hands for asking vehicles behind you to overtake or slow down?
  • Remember crossing a huge line of bullock carts on the highway and cursing your luck?

Re: Remember when.....

Remember when you had to wind the clock once in 2-3 days to keep it running?

In my father's house, there is his grandfather's clock that's more than 100 years old and runs properly for 2 days after winding.

  • Still the best way to give indication when driving. Using indicators can be confusing. (This topic is discussed else where on TBHP)

Re: Remember when.....

Remember on DD on Sunday afternoons, to find what language was the regional movie would really be?
Also, on chitramanjari to wait and see if they put a song in your regional language?

It made us watch different Indian language movies/songs which we dont do now.

CP/M, ISIS, home-brew (I used to write RTOS). The 8" were around for quite some time - Intel, IDS (ICIM), HCL (the 68K based Magnums had 5.25"), Wipro... Apple II/IIe were the first with 5.25", I think. Still have some of those floppies in my 'museum'.

Like rotating the hand (finger pointed down) clockwise outside the window to indicate turning right? Or frantically pointing front and back to show the intention of going straight? Happens only you-know-where.

Remember the stickers on Ambys? "Power Break (Brake)", "AC No hand signal"!!!

Re: Remember when.....

Awesome thread.

Remember when we used to wait every fortnight for Indrajal comics esp. Phantom, Bahadur, Mandrake, etc.
