Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

Voted yes, and I have already done so.

I do not consider just my job as the most important and guiding factor. I would like to look at the entire picture in form of 'summation of life'. If you look it that way, then your life comprises of a lot of other factors like family, friends, comfortable living, ease in commuting, less time spent in traffic, pollution level below the red line, etc. which was sorely missing in the metro I lived in. If you factor in everything, you will see that your work is one part of this whole equation. So, if you lose some, then you gain some and the sum total of life will be still the same. Now it entirely depends upon your priorities. People who are ambitious career wise obviously have less options in tier-2/3 cities compared to the metro cities.
Having said so, a good, stable and well paying job/ work is absolutely necessary, since money is a real important factor in life without which, you can lose a lot of factors that I stated above. So, considering everything if the situation permits, I would always opt for a smaller town in the current world.

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

This topic is close to my heart, though I do not live in a big metro I can see the changing times and the increase in stress, pollution garbage and waste disposal problems. But it is the availability of emergency medical help which outweighs all the cons of living in a city. Other Pros of a city would be access to amenities, services, existing social circle etc.

Problem within many parts of my city is that slowly and steadily many former residential areas are getting commercialised including ours. The road in front of my house which barely saw any traffic from mid 90's to late 2010's is like a main road now. So it makes sense to get out of the way and find peace elsewhere. Getting away from the constant hustle and bustle of the city will do one's mind and body good.

Ahem, I see so many YESes, do we all agree on what a Tier-2 city is?

I actually moved from Tier-1 to Tier-3 in 2006, and in 2010 due to my son's therapy requirements, my family had to move back to Bangalore. I have been spending 50:50 time between a Tier-1 and Tier-3 city every month.

I don't know whether residents of Noida, Gurgaon, or Ghaziabad consider themselves as from Tier-2 cities . As part of NCR, they probably consider these cities to be extended New Delhi (though, they are administered separately).

Ideal Tier-2 cities, in my opinion, are Mysore/Tirupati/Coimbatore/Vijayawada - well connected, good medical and educational facilities, functioning aiports, and close enough to Tier-1 cities.

Thank you Samurai for the list. Makes the discussion much more objective now. Digging a little further, I would say that this classification is not actually correct. In fact, if we look deeper, this tier classifications are based on population due to which a lot of inconsistencies are creeping into this list.
For eg. Asansol is not in the same league as say Ranchi and moving on, obviously a lot of cities including Ranchi are not up against Gurgaon to be categorized under the same tier which is 2. A lot of such examples can be drawn from the list above.

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

Let alone another town, I wouldn't move to a different street in my locality! I'm good, no moving for me! Great restaurants, shops and a lovely residential locality and this is (btw) my 'constituency': nope I'm not a politician but I "work from home"!

South Chennai is a great place to live, peace loving and gentle folks; there are civic problems here but which city/town doesn't have it? We had acute water shortage this summer, but after the rains, the water table's risen and all is back to normal. I voted 'NO'!

Smaller towns are okay for a short stint or vacation, they are not 'hot and happening' like a Metro with all it's amenities, malls, multiplexes, healthcare etc. Even the infra is much better and the authorities are more prone to set things right in a Metro than in a small town. After the floods and cyclone, Chennai was back to normal quiet fast, same can't be said of smaller towns.

Chennai being a state capital and one of the biggest cities in South India has it's own benefits. Well connected nationally and internationally. I could go on and on!

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

Interesting... The Tier 2 list doesn't have many from West Bengal. Shame, and a certain Dr B C Roy saw the perils of Calcutta centric development 70 years back. Too bad he wasn't backed by Mrs Gandhi to create a series of satellite towns (or rather develop the ones like Durgapur, Asansol mentioned in this list to actual liveable Tier 2 cities).

So for me the answer is No. Even though we don't have an own home in Kolkata (and prospects look increasingly bleak due to a bad job situation and very high real estate prices) I probably won't relocate to anywhere else in West Bengal.

Because they are not Tier-2. For example, Karnataka has only 3 Tier-2 cities after Bangalore, which Tier-1. Everything else is Tier-3. I think NCR/Gudgaon should be considered part of New Delhi for this survey.

This is the official list made by Government of India. While we are voting, it is better have to a single reference point.

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

Voted for "NO".

Cant think about any city outside Bombay if it is in India. I have stayed in Bangalore and Pune, also have spent considerable time in cities like Ahmedabad, Baroda & Surat. But have come back to Bombay like fish to water

The difficulties even in Tier 2 cities still make life difficult ::

1. Poor transportation systems. Nothing beats the trains/buses of Bombay
2. Struggle for basic amenities like a Gas cylinder (without bribing the gaswalla)
3. Better Medical facilities in Bombay for aging parents and grand parents
4. Better Education and schools in Bombay (maybe expensive though)
5. Poor traffic discipline especially Pune. I know Bombay is also turning bad but Tier 2 cities are at an altogether different level of Bad.

The grass looks green on the other side but I think it would be extremely difficult to adopt for city dwellers used to the conveniences on offer

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

I voted Yes and did make the move last year.

I moved from Mumbai to Kochi last year. I had spent 12 years in Mumbai and loved (and still do) the city to bits.
My main reason for moving were

1) The possibility of living in a much bigger space
2) The increasing levels of pollution in Mumbai (especially from November to March) and the consequent impact on health of my children (and adults too).
3) The fact that i could be near to my parents when they need me most (My parents leave in a city less than 90 minutes by car)

What helped my move
1) My company was flexible about the location
2) Since my work involves international travel, the decent air connectivity from Kochi helped
3) Some decent schools in and around Kochi

But there are few things that i miss and the biggest of it is the cosmopolitan culture in Mumbai and the work ethic.

Now that it has been almost 1.5 years, i am happy about the move and all of my objectives have been met (more than less)

In a heartbeat, I will move to a tier II city.
I miss Mysore a lot. If my wife ever decides to quit her job in Bangalore, I will move the next day to Mysore.
Close to my parents, less pollution and traffic.
I sometimes reach Bangalore quicker from Mysore compared to certain within Bangalore distances.

Thanks for the list Samurai. That settles it. I stay with no.

If I return to India ever, then there are hardly any tier 2 cities I would consider settling down (except the ones in Kerala - for obvious reasons of being my home state and a few other like Mysuru, Coimbatore, Goa )

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

Did not vote as it is kind of a Yes and No for me. At this time, am entrenched in Bangalore and would not think of moving unless there is an unavoidable forcing function. But having said that, few years down the line, would look forward to going back to my home town-which is a tier 2 city by definition.

Re: Metro city BHPians - Would you be willing to move to a smaller town?

If I could, I would. I still am in touch with smaller cities, and I dont dig many things that metro's give - the shopping malls, the mass transport system, eating out etc. But unfortunately, life has us so entrenched here in Bangalore that cant get up and move :(.

But it is not as easy as one would think it is - especially for people who have lived in Metros LONG enough. We get used to facilities, but beyond that the social set up is very different. Things like water supply, near un-interrupted power, medical facilties, and for whom it matters, education facilities etc are better in metros. The setup's in most Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are at a very different level which will make transition difficult.

I could even live in a village, but often the local socio-political equations are beyond us city slickers. Such moves are going to be too drastic for most, unless one has maintained continuous touch with the people there.

Life is seriously at a much more relaxed pace outside the metro's.

Sir, you mirrored my exact thought. Nothing beats the charm of big cities especially ones like Bombay. It's like a very intricate timepiece with many complications. But at the end of the day, every piece of this complicated mechanism fulfills it's purpose, and the watch ticks on.
