Any damage apart from lungs is mostly due to the attack on our own body due to an overactive immune system and not due to the virus, which till now, is known to mostly affect only our lungs. Acute kidney damage is a known effect of such an immune system attack.

After Spain reporting that their antibody study found 11 to 15% of the population had contracted the virus in Madrid and other epicenters, now the British government has reported that 17% of London has been exposed to it. I believe this is the reason the numbers have started declining in Europe. There seems no way of controlling it until at least 15% of people in the cities contract it and recover. This also shows their death toll percentage in a new light.

Sweden's goal of achieving Herd Immunity have a long way to go, according to this CNN article. If Sweden with a little over 10 million population will take months to achieve herd immunity, then Vaccine is the only way for herd immunity in India and administering vaccination to all in India will be taking years.

Sweden is still nowhere near 'herd immunity,' even though it didn't go into lockdown

Quote:
Sweden has revealed that despite adopting more relaxed measures to control coronavirus, only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed the antibodies needed to fight the disease by late April.

The figure, which Sweden's Public Health Authority confirmed to CNN, is roughly similar to other countries that have data and well below the 70-90% needed to create "herd immunity" in a population.
Quote:
Sweden's percentage of people with antibodies is not far off that of other countries that did enforce lockdowns. In Spain, 5% of people had developed coronavirus antibodies by May 14, according to preliminary results of an epidemiological study by the government.

Guess this is good news.
Russia enters final stage of "Favipiravir" medicine trial. During trials, on an average Covid19 was cleared from patients in four days. Lets hope this is wonder drug and some news from Bangladesh also came in with doctors trying two medicines and managing to treat patients. There are news from USA too which must be promising or may be I am overtly hopeful. Some interferon treatment or something also depicted very good results for Covid19 treatment. With so many patients and some small percentage unfortunately even in critical stage, why cant the clinical trials speed up ?

Why is there so much publicity around hydroxychloroquine for treatment/management of covid-19? Even from the beginning most studies have found it be inefficient at best and with added negative impact at worse.

Yet another study from Lancet -

Quote:
We were unable to confirm a benefit of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, when used alone or with a macrolide, on in-hospital outcomes for COVID-19. Each of these drug regimens was associated with decreased in-hospital survival and an increased frequency of ventricular arrhythmias when used for treatment of COVID-19.
This was a study involving over 96,000 hospitalized patients.

Where two negatives don't add up to a positive: yet end up sending across positive vibes

My district Chikkamagaluru was one among the last to come out of green zone in Karnataka. The case that necessitated this change was of a popular doctor working in one of the PHCs. Officially referred to as P-1295, this supposedly Corona positive person was promptly isolated and nearly 1500 of his primary and secondary contacts were home and institution quarantined.

Today, the district administration came out with the news that the positive was actually a negative; a false result - an outcome of faulty testing apparatus.

After being tested negative four times in as many days, P-1295 and all his contacts are being let off today.

The amount of public money spent, human resources deployed and the paranoia spread because of one false positive is way too much to ignore.

Now, we are confused whether to rejoice because we have one less case to worry about or lose sleep over the inefficient babus who are supposedly taking care of our well being.

I hope Favipiravir and Remdesivir trials come out good. There are also some other antivirals showing promise. One in China and some other kind of drugs from Israel.
That should help easing the lockdown and have positive outcome on the economic pandemic this is now unleashing.

Drug touted by Trump to treat COVID-19 linked to higher death risk - study
Quote:
(Reuters) - The anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which U.S. President Donald Trump says he has been taking and has urged others to use, was tied to an increased risk of death in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, a large study published on Friday showed.

In the study that looked at more than 96,000 people hospitalized with COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, those treated with hydroxychloroquine or the related chloroquine had higher risk of death and heart rhythm problems than patients who were not given the medicines.

The study, published in the Lancet medical journal, showed no benefit for coronavirus patients taking the drugs.
Quote:
Trump said this week he has been taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventative medicine despite a lack of scientific evidence.

The Lancet study authors suggested that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine should not be used to treat COVID-19 outside of clinical trials until studies confirm their safety and efficacy in such patients.
...
Quote:
The Lancet study looked at data from 671 hospitals where 14,888 patients were given either hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, with or without an antibiotic, and 81,144 patients were not given such treatments.

The status on hydroxychloroquine is just totally confusing. Seems to swing like a pendulum.

Over past couple of days have seen positive and negative reports. Global Research; British NHS staff taking part; Increases deaths.

Both from same news source, news already mentioned above:

21 May: Hydroxychloroquine: NHS staff to take drug as part of global trial
22 May: Hydroxychloroquine: Trump's Covid-19 'cure' increases deaths, global study finds

Guess it depends on when its taken. Most use has been as a prophylactic drug or when the conditions are not bad. It could be bad when you have certain 'other' conditions due to the virus.

OT: I still believe the study and results would have been different if Mr T had not endorsed it (kidding )

Propaganda is so easy these days, it doesn't matter if it is truth or falsehood, as long as the message is simple and lucid, it will spread because no one is devoid of confirmational bias.

On a side note, whether Bill Gates is becoming opportunistic or not, certain businesses certainly are thriving, have you noticed increased advertisements of health and life insurances ? In one of the adds, they bluntly say, "aap nahi ho tho kya hoga, aajhi karwalo, mehenga nahi hai". Right moment ya, everyone is heck scared for their lives.
