re: The Coronavirus Thread

Warmer weather could slow the spread of coronavirus. The statement is based on recent analysis of MIT not by me, as usual. Here is the link:

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/6...armer-weather/

Wanted to share something positive.

Italy (Rome) and Spain (Madrid) right now are at 12℃ and Germany (Brelin) at 7℃. Maybe that's the reason for high number of cases as temperatures between 03℃ to 13℃ are ideally suited for coronavirus transmission. Let's hope our warmer weather will help us in fighting against this virus.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

First the source: The New York Times

Guys, I picked up an interesting trend for the NY state, and it might help in understanding the gravity in our country. The population of NY state is less than that of Bangalore < 1 Crore, not including everyday migrants. On Monday March 16, there were 464 cases. On Friday, March 19, there were 7845 cases. Wow.

No it wasn't a sudden jump, but infact the infected people didn't know, at the start of the week that they were infected, because they were not tested. Last night there were 10,000 new tests bringing the total tested population to 32427 people. So what does this show? More aggressive testing will bring in more cases and will effectively stop the spread.

Do we have a similar data for India. How many are we testing everyday? I cant believe there hasn't been a single case of community spread. All the cases we see are only from people who have recently been to the affected country.

On the other grim news, we have seen the President of India himself being compromised. How irresponsible are the parliamentarians, including the health minister of certain state partying, while preaching social distancing to the masses. Unless we take the bull by its horn, all we are starting is at a deep dark abyss.

The least we can do is to be sane and follow the protocol and never ever lose our guard and think "it's for them"

re: The Coronavirus Thread

There has been a worrying uptick in Kerala. 12 cases yesterday, 5 of which are the tourists from UK. 6 are from Kasarkode and one of those 6 was issued stay at home but defied the directives and went around meeting people - possibly infecting them all as well. Kasarkode has to be locked down now.

India's most literate state has its own share of padhe likhe Gawar
Meanwhile we can brace for an avalanche of new cases as I read that 3 private entities have been given permission to carry out tests.

But I am still crossing my fingers as we have not yet seen evidence of a widespread community transfer.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

In these times should there also be restrictions on domestic workers entering the house - e.g the sweeper, gardener etc?

I have my old parents staying at home with me. So, it's been around 9 days now that we sent our maid on a fully paid, indefinite leave of absence. For someone who comes into contact with a large number of people, cannot maintain good hygiene due to nature of work, and travels regularly in public transport, I assessed her at a very high risk of being a carrier. Moreover, her cleaning and dusting duties mean she will come in contact with almost all articles inside the house!

I stay in lotus, the society where the Noida incident, latest one, occurred. For the last week, there's been no maids in the society. Because one of them worked in the house where the case came from, and all of them live in a cluster some distance away.
It's been close to a week of Netflix, work, utensils, kid's projects and what not. Good fun the isolation has turned into.
Luckily, I bought a bench and some weights, so am able to work out. And the boy had his birthday in Feb, and has a lot of "scientist" sets to play. My wife, being in HR, is tied up the whole day in the study working on bcp.

Good for you! I'm trying since a week to convince my parents to get our maid (she's been working at our place for 40+ years) move inside with them and stop work with other houses; and stop anyone else to enter the house going forward.

Today I asked what's the distancing plan of atleast 4-5 guys who frequently enter our house - the driver, maid's family members, cook, and neighborhood shop delivery guys. She had no thoughts - till date she was only thinking about the maid.

It's very hard to dictate terms sitting far away from a different city. But hoping I'm able to instill a quarantine-setup process there. We have 4 aged folks in the house; 1 over 90, 1 over 70 (maid) and two in 60s; not at all a good situation.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

So how do you get tested if you have symptoms and no travel history?
A reco from a physician? (But doesn’t the protocol remain same as earlier even if private labs are being roped in, ie, you have to have a travel history).
Helpline number?

The preparedness in terms of locally sourced test kits could have been initiated in January. Now its still evaluation stage and would 3 weeks to go live. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.new...a-2544795.html

This is an analysis paper and not research paper. This paper finds a correlation between temperatures and the high prevalence of cases.

However, the paper does not have any controlled tests or research to back its claim. For example. Virus originated in China, and at the peak christmas break ended when people from all over the world, in china for vacation with family returned to their home countries. These home countries are Europe and USA.

So while the paper may have some truth, analysis papers are never considered to be scientific. For example do you know Nicolas cage movies are the reason people drown?

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Strict social distancing is the "only" way to delay the onset of this pandemic. Earlier the people understand the seriousness of this the better. I think people have become complacent here because they believe (even old) they can survive it but what they do not understand is that it is only possible as long as medical facilities and personnel are working at its best. Once the facilities are overrun and overwhelmed it will be too late for realisation.

People who I find hard to talk sense into fall into two age groups mostly - the under 20's and the over 60's.
--

The UK guy who tried escaping on March 15th after turning Covid+ve was caught at the airport and his tour group was also isolated the same day. Of the 12 new cases in the state, as on March 20th, 5 of them are from this guys tour group.
--

Social distancing is the only way to stop this virus, deprive it of a host to multiply. Don't be a host.

Correct! There is also a DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION being spread by many educated folks around about the strength of our Indian Immunity, given whatsoever reasons. Many are citing this as a reason to move around, socialise etc. Request everyone to please NOT trust any empirical perception!
