re: The Coronavirus Thread

I had long talk with my dad yesterday night (he is a civil servant) about the situation as I am not home (live in PG) but after yesterday’s announcement I badly wanted to go home. Since he was tired, I got very straight-to-the-point answers. I believe It will answer lot of queries and opinions people have here,
(please pardon my poor translation skills)

Me- I want to come home, is it possible?
Dad- Would you die if you don’t come home and stay there for month?
Me- No, but it is long time.
Dad- NO, I cannot make any arrangement, stay there. (I got his point)
Me- Police stops everywhere, It is getting difficult here, all of a sudden...
Dad- Good, It is not sudden, situation will get even stricter. If cornflakes are out of stock buy poha, do not complain. Give away your choices and wants, go with needs and whatever is available.
Me- What if I don’t even get poha?
Dad- Don't worry. You will at least get poha if not cornflakes. People have been doing commendable work in background since long time, it is not that it is not happening because you don’t know.
Me- But it is a long time,
Dad- Do you have any other solution to current scenario?
Me- No.

Some other points which he mentioned in-between the conversation,
Dad- “Present people with lesser money is given priority over present money with lesser people.”
Dad- “PM didn’t said 21 days "only", all depends on how things will work out.”
Dad- “Didn’t you hear his speech carefully? He clearly said live where you are, do not leave.”
Dad- “You are home, so everyone is home (not in sense of lockdown, but in sense of not working). Clear away this misunderstanding. People are working. It is war like situation for us, governments are putting in all the efforts they could. I haven’t seen this much alertness and co-ordination in work for long time, maybe since ...”
Dad- “Orders are given to do everything possible to save each and every people/patient.”

My humble request to people commenting here- Please do not indulge here in discussions of quality of life because, this is the matter of life.

Do not get panic and let others panic,
Say home,
Stay healthy.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

I can't think of any other time in my lifetime when our daily lives have been disrupted so much, but looking at the positive side, I'm sure this phase will leave many of us with (lifestyle) lessons for a lifetime! For example:
-How can we manage without things that we are used to (and take for granted their availability)
-How can we manage with less
-How can we quickly adapt to the fast changing situation
-How can we help others in need
-How can we seek help from others if and when needed
-How can we handle stressful situations (ones we aren't used to facing)
-Working from home on a more frequent basis can bring it's own set of challenges for many of us, can we manage them

*Please spare a thought for people who live on daily wages and a literally hand-to-mouth existence, how will they tide over such a lockdown ?

*Please do spare a thought for many of those who don't have the option of working from home as their jobs involve working outside their homes at crowded places or the job entails traveling around the city/state/country

*Also a time to thank all those people who are making it possible for us to get our supply of essentials daily

*This is not a time to find fault, point fingers, defy requests/orders from the administration, or panic. Stay away from rumours and rumour mongers.
Rather, this is the time we need to unite and align to come out alive and for the future of our generations.

Newspaper is essential especially at a time like this for local news and regional awareness in local dialect for which electronic media may not be suitable. Social media has deep penetration but one does not know the authenticity of news hence should be consumed with caution.

The collateral damage due to the virus and lockdowns are huge. The number of people who will die due to other (preventable) causes will never be known. As a doctor, I feel helpless when I know that babies and children will die because they postponed healthcare.
If you come out of this alive and well, remember many people died in the attempts made to keep you alive.

When it all ends, perhaps it could be a good idea to have a week for 'forced stay indoors unless critical' every year to let the earth heal a bit from the constant pounding we subject her to.

Well summed up!

I'm finding that lot more time and effort is spent in communication to get things coordinated and done collaboratively, yes we do have tools for collaboration but it's simply a lot more time spent on it when everyone is working from home, a situation most aren't used to in India. This also ends up making the days much longer than they would be if one were to work at the office premises, co-located with a team.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Like a lot of other people on this thread, I'm also worried about what the lockdown will do to the people who need to work everyday to earn their daily bread. I know govt has mentioned that they would take care, but I think it is likely that their reach and execution will be limited.

Is there anything we can do about it - Are there any known good NGOs which are working on helping the needy in this situation? Recommendations please..

Thank you!

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Why do we have 2 threads on the related topic ?
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/shift...il-2020-a.html

It is best if the Mod's merge these two and leave it in the Corona virus thread itself
my 2cents..

Apparently this is the official site for tracking Covid19 status in India.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

This is an interesting read on the situational analysis and the 'what next'.

What’s the current situation?
What options do we have?
What’s the one thing that matters now: Time
What does a good coronavirus strategy look like?
How should we think about the economic and social impacts?

Takeaways of the article -
Our healthcare system is already collapsing.
Countries have two options: either they fight it hard now, or they will suffer a massive epidemic.
If they choose the epidemic, hundreds of thousands will die. In some countries, millions.
And that might not even eliminate further waves of infections.
If we fight hard now, we will curb the deaths.
We will relieve our healthcare system.
We will prepare better.
We will learn.
The world has never learned as fast about anything, ever.
And we need it, because we know so little about this virus.
All of this will achieve something critical: Buy Us Time.
If we choose to fight hard, the fight will be sudden, then gradual.
We will be locked in for weeks, not months.
Then, we will get more and more freedoms back.
It might not be back to normal immediately.
But it will be close, and eventually back to normal.
And we can do all that while considering the rest of the economy too.

There seems to be some mismatch between that site and the MOH site figures.

This is a cool one. It also shows individual clusters. See below.

On another note, new infections seemed to decrease slightly yesterday. But I also saw some news reports of first evidence of community spread being established in UP.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Something got me thinking:

The COVID-19 is the disease of the Elite. I mean, it primarily spread from foreign inbound air travellers, or you can say, the upper middle or elite class. With time, it is expected (god forbid) to spread to lower income group and finally to the poor.

Imagine if it was the other way around. If the disease had started from the Poor, there would have been absolute mayhem by now. Poor do not have access to proper testing, diagnosis or treatment. Majority of cases would have gone un detected. Our maids, drivers, cleaners would have spread the disease to middle class and finally to the elite class.

In a way, it is a positive that this disease had a top down spread in the society. If it was a disease having bottoms up spread, we would have been devastated as a country, with virtually no chance to fight back.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

It's going to be a lot of pain in the coming days.

To me, the silver-lining is that China has been able to contain this epidemic:
  1. It shows that what we are trying to tackle is not an impossible thing to do.
  2. Also means that the factory of the world is slowly coming to it's feet. So supply will rampup before the demand gradually shoots up as well. If it would have been the other way round (demand rising before supply), the recovery would be much more painful.
This too shall pass!
