Re: The Music Thread

I am a big fan of Kaushiki Chakraborty. I listen to her at least once a day.

Here is one of my favourite one from her. When she was just 21. She speaks hesitantly like a young girl, but sings like a veteran. For those who don't have the patience for a one hour long performance of Raag Kedar (which is great), you can hear a wonderful few minutes long Tillana she learned from Bala Murali Krishna himself. Yup, she spent two years studying Carnatic Classical with BMK, even though she is from Hindustani classical tradition.

Jump to video position 52:24 to watch the Tillana alone. It is short and beautiful rendition.

Re: The Music Thread

Very nice. Her dad was a student of BMK. Her voice got even better with mellowing.

When I saw her she was part of a joint presentation with my dance hero Pandit Birju Maharaj (and I used to have a big crush on Saswati Sen ) and flute legend Hariprasad Charasia. As well as being delighted by her voice, I was amazed at the respect paid to the youngster by the two veterans.

Kaushiki is the daughter of the legendary Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, a true doyen of Indian classical music. Huge shoes to fill for her but she has carved out a niche for herself. Heard her live several times and she has an extremely mellifluous voice. If you like her singing, be sure to check out her Coke studio collaboration with Shantanu Moitra, which is available on YouTube. It is a lovely song though of course not a pure classical rendition.

Hard not to know that after following her for a while. Her is dad is playing the harmonium in the video I shared. Apparently he promised her that he will play harmonium whenever she performs in public, this is in the initial years.

Hope some day I can hear her live. This pandemic has made such things impossible.

Sure, I will check it out.

Talking about Coke Studio, I want to share one from there. Two legends in action.

Really like these two songs, both of which couldn't be further from one another

Have never listened to his classical music but I just love his tamil song "Isaiyil thodanguthamma" from Hey Ram. Such a lovely song and he has gotten the pronunciation spot on. I wonder why he hasn't sung more in Tamil.

Yes, Pandit Ajoy Chakrobarty is one of the living legends of Indian classical music and a foremost disciple of the late great Pandit Gyaan Prakash Ghosh. His body of work is absolutely immense, and he has sung in many languages other than pure classical renditions.

Re: The Music Thread

Anybody into (relatively) newer rock music. Been in the metal scene for so long that now everything sounds the same and I have developed a dislike against prog rock/metal. So, here are some simple making really simple but great sounding and memorable music, also have added my own track at the end:

This is about anger management:

About betrayal in love (put the album version here because they cut Oli's solo in the video):

About doing your best, not much else (and oh yes! Ed Sloan plays 7 strings):

Most beautiful track by Chevelle:

Bonus Techno track when one rolls into a car-meet:

Last but not the least, this is one full Saturday of blood, sweat and tears:

I hope this is not an overload

Thanks for sharing Samurai. Was fortunate to attend her live performances at Pune. Her control over Swara and Laya is mesmerizing. She is now a torchbearer of Patiala Gharana of her father and the great Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

We are fortunate to have few excellent young singers across gharanas today. Worth Listening.

Jaipur Gharana - Manjiri Asanare-Kelkar
Agra - Bharathi Pratap
Gwalior - Shashwati Mandal
Kirana - Kumar Mardur, Sawani Shende
Bhendi Bazaar - Anuradha Kuber

Re: The Music Thread

Eric Carmen (ex- Raspberries pop group) who rose to fame in the mid 1970's with his solo career had a # 1 hit in the US Cash Box "All by myself" released in December 1975. The album was self titled.

His next hit single was "Never gonna fall in love again" which did not make it to # 1, but peaked at # 11 in the US Billboard charts though. It has outlived any expiry date and still rocks.

"Hungry eyes" was the third mega hit for the singer from the 1987 Hollywood hit film "Dirty Dancing" starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Though a very good composition, as a melody this is nowhere near the first two hits. Nevertheless Eric with his few mega hit singles did not remain a "one hit wonder".

Thanks for the recommendation, I will listen to them.

This one just came up in my youtube feed. Never heard of her, but she is delightful to hear. I don't understand Marathi, but the composition is very good.

Certainly is. yes!

Here's one from the Carnatic realms. I'm very fond of the young woman singing here and a huge fan of her music. Streamed tonight as an on-line-this-year Navaratri concert, from my favourite sabha...

Re: The Music Thread

33 RPM jacket of The Beatles album "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" (1977) from my collection.
Please do not miss the note by their Producer Late George Martin in the second image - a "must read" for every Beatle fan. This LP is US made and was never released in India.

This Omkar Dadarkar's voice reminds me of Pundit Jasraj. Sweet sweet voice...
