He is appearing for his 12th board exams now and would need to make a choice in next couple of months.

Nice to know that there are youngsters aspiring to have an automotive career. There are different skills and competencies that can pave the way for a successful career in the Auto domain. Base engineering degrees (Auto, Mechanical, electrical \ electronic, mechatronics, Chemical, materials, process,...) are all possible paths. Even with the industry shift toward electric, autonomous and connected vehicles an undergrad degree in a base engineering discipline + later specialization in electronics \ mechatronics is a good combination. Im not advocating against an undergrad in mechatronics - just stating possible options.
Also bear in mind that professionals in finance, sales/BD, HR, supply chain, logistics, training and similar domains are as integral to the Auto industry as engineers and technicians.
So let him consider his academic strengths, aptitude and personality before taking a call. If he is an outgoing person, with good interpersonal and communication skills he's likely to have a successful career (and find his work fulfilling) in Sales, Purchasing, HR, Marketing ... roles that play to his strengths. If he enjoys math and number crunching is his thing finance may be a great option rather than sales or engineering. An emerging field for young professionals is ADAS (advanced driver assist systems) which has requirements related to software development, camera, radar, lidar technologies and the likes.
