Working from home? Show us your home office

Related thread - Your office desk / workstation (What does your office desk/workstation look like?)

By now many of us will be working from home, due to the Corona virus.

For some that will be almost a non event. For others it can be quite a challenge. Not everybody has an appropriate space, internet connection etc. Not all jobs might be suitable doing them from home. What about family life? That is supposed to continue and having kids around your laptop whilst you are trying to speak on a Skype Bridge is far from ideal.

So what does your “home office” look like? What are your challenges and how do you deal with it?

My job entails travelling a lot, last year I spend 39 weeks travelling. So most of my time I tend to be in one of our offices overseas, hotels, airport lounges. When I am in my home country the Netherlands, I tend to work from home. I might visit our local office once a month, if that. That was before the Corona crisis. I have been grounded, flight wise, more or less since the beginning of the year. So I have been working from home day in, day out.

I am very fortunate when it comes to home working. Because I have my own office, with a large desk, excellent internet connectivity. We live in a rural area and we have a large tree next to the house, lots of birds. Colleagues on the Skype Bridges are always commenting as they can hear the birds!

I have my work laptop set up with a Jabra Speaker phone. Ideal as I easily spend upwards of 6 hours on Skype bridges and or Microsoft Team bridges, per day. If need be, I can print from our office network onto my local printers. My personal Mac book is there too. Razor thin line between personal and professional life. Time wise, resource wise!

For me working from home works out pretty ok. I like the flexibility it gives me. I might get on a Skype Bridge at 0500am with my Australian colleagues for a few hours. Take a little break, maybe go shopping and get back on line later in the afternoon with my American colleagues.

However, being confined now to my home office, nice as it is, does give a bit of a different feeling to it, I must admit. It is not voluntary as such any more.

What I miss is the face to face interaction with colleagues. Bumping into somebody at the coffee machine, or the parking lot.

I wonder how long this will last, but I think it is likely to be months rather than weeks!

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

I don't have the space to set up an independent workplace at my home. I use a temporary laptop stand and wireless headphones. That's pretty much it.

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

If everyone else is working from home, I will continue to come to office.

Jokes apart, as Eddy has mentioned above, I too do not have a proper setup at home. Whenever I work from home, I use the dining table, a laptop and a pair of headphones.

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

Once upon a time it looked like this...
Working from home? Show us your home office-01-img_20180817_190838.jpg

But then I traded my desktop for a laptop, which also gave me a new degree of freedom (and questionable take-it or leave-it home decor):
Working from home? Show us your home office-02-img_20181121_193612.jpg

And with that geographic freedom came this:
Working from home? Show us your home office-03-20191105_083535_hdr.jpg

And this:
Working from home? Show us your home office-img_20181001_063951.jpg

But really, the ability to be productive anywhere!

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

I work from home only and at all times - and I love it. Though i have a dedicated room for office, have been sitting out and working for the past month- enjoying the Spring.

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

It used to look like this before:

Working from home? Show us your home office-earlier.jpg

However I too have a jugaad space setup for now.
I sold the old table as it was a bit too big for the space and I was going to get a new table setup but sort of sudden shift due to corona forced me to set something up real quick.

With a foldable table and a socket under it, Perhaps different from others, minimalism is the preference.

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

I work from home when I am in Bangalore at my current profile. There I have a table and chair in the master bedroom. Laptop so it is connected via Wi-Fi. In Bombay I am now gonna be forced to work from home. Not fun. Don't have a table or chair here so need to purchase that. Temporarily it involves sitting on my bed and working with the laptop and mousepad so that my mouse works properly. I can't use the trackpad on a laptop for a lot of work. I also have a wired headset, mostly for listening to music, but also for calls if necessary.

re: Working from home? Show us your home office

I have a dedicated workstation though this is my personal PC; I used it for over 10 years but made it a recording unit for all the CCTV cameras installed in the house. Can move the keyboard/mouse aside and put my official laptop and work all day. But I am lazy enough to sit all day so I am usually on my bed with a laptop stand if required along with earphones to connect over webex calls.

PS - This is an old picture, so ignore that age old MTNL 1MBPS connection router, it has been replaced with 200MBPS airtel optic fibre about 15 months back

Is this a custom made setup? I mean the wardrobe and the study table was custom made?

I really like this setup. For a small bedroom which is the case with most apartments these days, this is quite a nice way to squeeze your study table.

Thank for sharing.
