Curfew in night will ensure that less number of policeman needed in night so they can get much needed rest.
In my opinion this could be one of the reasons behind imposing curfew in night.

Maybe that's the intention.
But I am thinking, isn't this counter-intuitive? 9 pm to 5 am is usually the time when majority of the people are anyways homebound.
So is the curfew really needed? And if the answer is yes - then who is going to enforce the curfew if the idea is to give some relaxation to the cops?

I am somewhat skeptical here.

It’s meant as a deterrent because generally all drunk driving, speeding and road accidents happen during the night hours.

Even Pre-Covid times the Police had checkpoints at places where these things generally happen, say for example at Marine Drive etc in Mumbai. It must be the same for other cities as well. Overall Police presence required would be much lower than the patrolling during lockdown in these Covid times.

Thus the law does both, discouraging unwarranted behaviour on our roads and give a breather to our Police force on a rotational basis as the manpower required is much lower.

Cheers

An article about how Vietnam with a population of 100 million kept Covid deaths to zero! A lesson for all nations on what to do next time a pandemic.

People are expected to sleep at home in the night. As of now, during day, people come out only for work and buying essentials. At night, people don't work and shops are closed, so there is no reason for people to come out.

Anyway, the central govt has given up the fight. We are all on our own now. So we should discipline ourselves rather than being disciplined by the govt. So better stay at home and protect your family.

Maharashtra Government has encouraged people to cycle to nearby areas from June 3 as 'it automatically ensures social distancing'.

Thank you for the link.

From the article which says "Their actions in late January and early February were very much in advance of many other countries. And that was enormously helpful ... for them to be able to retain control."

Seems their early actions paid off well.
I don't remember specifics, but what was our official govt reactions to Covid19 in that time?

Nothing much, putting a infra red thermometer to one's forehead! No quarantine for travellers from abroad at that time. The government grossly underestimated the threat. What happened next was botched up catch up plans. We will have to see how this ends. As the Central government has washed their hands off, the blame will land on citizens. Going forward I suspect states may stop reporting cases officially.

Namaste Trump

Both US and India were busy partying in Ahmedabad and Delhi. Didn't prepare at all. India bought some time using the lockdown. US, even the lockdown was too late there. Now US is leading, and India catching up, thanks to the ill timed lockdown relaxations.

re: India on full lockdown. Edit: Now extended with relaxations till June 30, 2020

This thread has suddenly gone silent. Cases will most probably cross 10K tomorrow and India most probably will be placed second or first in the number of cases. Govt as expected has given up and trying to score political points treating migrant issue as the priority. So cases are going up and restrictions are going down. Totally ironic.
Do we need to be concerned about the rise in cases or take this in stride is the moot question? Not heard from people who were dead opposed to lockdown.

As a doctor do you still think this could have helped? Kerala is again a sample case. It was officially near zero cases two weeks back. Then the inward migration with quarantine started. The cases are now averaging 50-100 and going up daily. There are many practical difficulties in implementing quarantine with so many asymptomatic cases.

Karnataka released new guidelines today. 7 day institutional quarantine and another 7 days home quarantine for those coming from Maharashtra.

The only real exemption is if you have a COVID negative test certificate.

The thread is far from silent. You are seeing more pragmatic information updates than substantive debates because the subject is essentially closed.

We are opening up. No question about it at all.

They may use the word lockdown to describe the situation even as they are easing things open. But by no means are we going to be in a full lockdown.

Number is infections mean nothing. For Covid and it’s death rate, we simply cannot afford the human toll of a lockdown as a countermeasure any longer. That much has become amply clear.

We have to look at the reasons and come out with solutions.
Why did the cases go up? Our strategy of testing only those who had symptoms as per ICMR criteria was inadequate. What was needed, test everyone with lower respiratory symptoms. Contact tracing and testing secondary cases was a joke when you were testing primary cases inadequately!

Yes, we need to be very very concerned now as essentially the government has no idea how to go ahead.

Why are cases increasing in Kerala and Karnataka for example, because all the people of these states working in Maharashtra, Delhi etc are coming back. The problem was too sudden a lockdown. What should have been done? We should have allowed people to return to home states and then lock down. Once majority had settled down it would have been far easier to quarantine and finish the spread. Now with inter state travel allowed, the already exhausted work force will mostly give up. How will people will react to another lockdown? They will mostly show the middle finger!

One doesn’t need to be a genius or a visionary, or even a college graduate for that matter, to be successful. One just need right framework and apply common sense. There is a saying “Just like a garland in the hands of a monkey”.

This is exactly what many here have been writing about.

a section of public health experts and epidemiologists, including the deputy director general, DGHS, health ministry, have said that in developing its COVID-19 strategy—especially the lockdown—the government did not consult epidemiologists, and relied instead on “clinicians and academic epidemiologists with limited field training and skills”.

Had the migrant persons been allowed to go home at the beginning of the epidemic, when the disease spread was very low, the current situation could have been avoided,” three medical professional associations highlighted

Thanks a lot. I agree, better not to plan travel in this case.

Thanks a ton for your detailed inputs with references. That clears my doubt. So, essentially one cannot travel by car for a 1 week round trip from Mumbai to Karnataka ( Belgaum in my case ) , even with a Covid negative test report. Guideline explicitly mentions that you need to produce a valid return ticket, which cannot be ascertained when you are travelling in your personal car.

+++

With the central government almost giving up on this and states enjoying autonomy, there will soon be hell lot of chaos around the country.

Good luck for people and govt. alike who still support this lockdown and are waiting for a vaccine to be developed. Stay home for next 1 year+ and pray fervently that the vaccine is effective. I would be really happy to be proven wrong if the vaccine is developed within next 2-3 months. This virus is clearly making a mockery of anyone who felt a few months of lockdown will eliminate this super contagious virus in a densely populated country like ours. As long as India or rather the entire world keeps harping about only the numbers / covid positives ( ) there is absolutely no hope out of this crisis, absolutely not. Mark my words.
