Is it even legal to fly at supersonic speed over a city? I have no idea regarding this hence the question.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

Yes everyone heard it. It's on news as well.

Initial source was sonic boom from a fighter jet but HAL is now denying this. NDMC says not an earth quake.

Some news reported some cloud phenomenon.

Sounded like a proper double sonic boom to me and there have been many low flying jets since morning interrupting my calls today.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

I heard it in south Bangalore, initially thought it could be some transformer blast, but no signs outside. The birds were panicked, people were confused. It was a very strong blast.

Apparently, this mysterious boom was heard throughout east and south Bangalore. Source

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

Did not hear anything like that here in North Bengaluru. Came to know only when watching Kannada news channels. Looks like the noise was heard in Kolar as well. Those who were interviewed on channels attributed this to the cyclone effect and some mentioned Semeru volcano in Java as the cause

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

Whatever I heard in Jayanagar was an aircraft, must have been going supersonic and we heard - days of thunder!

This is not the first time, sometimes its very loud - sometimes its not.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

They have started BMTC bus service in bangalore and the noise was that of BMTC bus going supersonic in the wide open roads.

I heard it too at Banerughatta. I doubt the HAL Jet theory.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

There is a likely chance its a fighter jet going supersonic. I have often experience this whenever I go to Kutch. Bhuj airforce base is very close to my village and often fighter jets carry on training exercises. Whenever these low flying jets go supersonic and break the sound barrier, there is a very loud BOOM sound. Because of the shock-wave, doors and windows often rattle. Some mud & clay houses even develop cracks in the walls.

I year and half back or so, I experienced similar sound / effect in my office. Later came to know that there was a furnace blast in a nearby refinery.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

I distinctly remembered that such an incident happened earlier also. Did a bit of googling and found it happened in Aug 2018. I don't remember (and couldn't google it) whether they concluded on the cause then also.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

But HAL rejects that it is an aircraft. Not from a verified source by the way.

Another theory that is floating:

It is suspected a Cloud blast above earth surface (around 4km above earth level) it happens as a part Atmospheric changes due to pressure of Cyclone from High temperature areas.

Re: Loud boom noise in Bangalore

My father believes that it was a sonic boom. Both of us went through a bunch of sonic boom videos , hearing the same "BOOM" sound in them.

However I am still not sure. I only know it sounded just like this:
