re: National Security Council asks Govt to ban 53 Chinese apps

I am glad the Govt is at least willing to show some teeth. It is the only way to get a message clearly out to the Chinese establishment. When after 26/11 we just sat and clicked our tongues it emboldened our terrorism exporting Western neighbour. While de-coupling our economy from that of China may not be either sensible or practical we must show them our teeth in quick ways now. I hope the Govt will see it through and not be slow and shabbily organized around it.

The last time India & China exchanged serious artillery fire was IIRC 1967. For the last 30+ years there has been a no violence agreement. It was written as a no exchange of fire agreement. It was not foreseen that iron clubs with spikes will be their weapon of choice!! Whatever claims and counter claims that they may have there has for a few decades been a set pattern of discourse to thrash them out. And it has largely worked so far. It even gave us hope that with China we were dealing with a wise adversary unlike Pakistan. What they've indulged in beyond the tragic deaths of our (and their) soldiers has been a betrayal of trust; a betrayal of an agreement. The only language they'll understand and respond to is the language of the danda. For its own sake I hope the Govt won't disappoint the citizens.

Chinese were even blackmailing us on Huawei 5g, I bet that will face the axe and it will also please the USA.

Anyone who wants to fund our martyrs families or the army personnel who no longer can serve their nation due to injuries can donate here.

This is excellent.
If only our countrymen showed more solidarity with the Govt, a lot of such measures can be done.
Unfortunately, there are too many people who would cut off their nose to spite their face.
We have seen many people expressing keen interest in Chinese products despite the current political climate.
If there is strong public sentiment in favour of boycotting Chinese products, Indian Govt could, in agreement with several Western countries, give China a bloody nose economically.

+1 to that. In addition the Chinese appear to be smart bullies, given that they seem to have managed to isolate India in its immediate neighborhood - Pakistan, Nepal and now getting into an free trade agreement with Bangladesh.

The recent sell out of One Plus https://www.business-standard.com/ar...2000078_1.html is such an example.

Extremely happy & proud to proclaim that none of the listed apps are installed on my phone!

However, I do have the Mi Fit app, which obviously is Chinese. Why are certain apps from Mi in the list whereas others are not?

Re: National Security Council asks Govt to ban 53 Chinese apps

The provocation this time is as serious as 1962. In some ways more serious because India has a lot more at stake and China is itching to be recognized as a world super power and not merely a very successful economy. India joining hands with USA+Japan+Australia, the PM announcing emphasis on producing locally, our proclaimed aim of luring out 1000 companies from China, our refusal to join RCEP, India's growing strategic presence in Vietnam, Philippines, Mauritius, Seychelles, India reaching out to Taiwan and Maldives & Sri Lanka once again veering back to a centre path between China & India are among the many reasons for China's aggression. They are trying to send a signal to the 14 countries that share a land border with them that "look how we can slap India the big boy around this neighbourhood, what chance do you think you stand". Also their eyes are not just on Galwan but on what they call historically the 5 fingers - Arunachal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, Ladakh. Mao Ze Dong had laid out this as their long term strategy in 1960 after they had occupied Tibet some years earlier. He referred to Tibet as the palm and these five areas as the fingers. They genuinely believe on basis of their interpretation of history that these are parts of a "Greater China". It is an interpretation open to serious question*. This long term aim, for which they are willing to wait 4 generations to fulfill, sets the tone for their strategy and planning. While it is all very well to have diplomacy with Xi Ping we need to remain alert to his true intentions.

* It is like us saying that as parts of SE Asia were strongly influenced by India culture and religion 1500 to 2500 years ago hence Java, Sumatra, Bali islands, Cambodia and the Malaya peninsula belong to us!!

Re: National Security Council asks Govt to ban 53 Chinese apps

Maybe an eye-opener to some of our friends who brand 'vocal for local' as jingoistic in nature and mix politics with national interests.

Also for those harping on 'individual freedom to buy VFM products with my money',
'China is the next Japan/Korea'
To fatalistic ones like 'They are way ahead of us, we can't beat them. Accept the reality'

True that we lost a decade to them in opening up the market, and again even one more decade after liberalisation to really shake of the shackles of socialism.
But it's really our fault. Our deep rooted corruption, chalta he attitude and numerous others.

But doesn't mean we shouldn't even try.
Five years ago, a 'Made in India' stickered smartphone was a joke. But now?
Sure chinese companies are ruling our smartphone market, and we have even less localisation than a phone made in Vietnam. But atleast it's a start.

Sorry for being , but wanted to rant even longer, since the India/China rivalry thread was closed before I could write in it

Let us examine, from the article:
Quote:
... over concerns that these weren’t safe and ended up extracting a large amount of data outside India
So the request for ban is not "vocal for local" initiative. The request is to ensure that there is no threat to national security. It has got no economic undertones.

By the way Zoom is also included in the list, I wonder how many people actively using it would actually remove it.

Interesting that Aliexpress Survived.

I am woried about TikTok being banned, it was keeping the free people confined mainly to homes, making videos, now they might just head out

Surprised to see Camscanner on the list. I have been a user and must commend their innovation. Time to delete it!

Overall a smart move by the government. They know we are too much dependent on hard (tangible) imports from China and blocking commodities will wreak havoc with an already ailing economy. On the other hand, banning apps which are soft imports have no direct impact on the economy. Plus majority of the apps in this list have decent substitutes anyway!

I removed all Chinese apps including Zoom & Camscanner from my phone last month. And it's about time we use trade as a method to put pressure on the Chinese.

Wow. So they come inside our territory, break all rules of engagement, kill our men in uniform and then put the blame of everything on us, and we reply by blocking some their apps. This brutal and strict action will strike fear of god into our enemies for all time to come. Seriously, are we truly that helpless?
