Team-BHP

Team-BHP - Although I have become a member recently, I have been following various threads for over 5 years now. Starting from car discussions, travelogues to investments, and LED TVs - it has everything.
XDA Developers - I frequent the forums for my devices, still trying out custom ROMS and kernels.
Reddit - gold mine of information, needs searching though
When I was in the USA, I used to frequent Jalopnik, CivicX. Also, I was an active member of the Think Digit and TechEnclave forums. Not anymore.
Quora is one platform I have been using since 2014, where I began writing since 2015 and I stay active on it.
I also have the honour of being a 2 time Top Writer on it- 2017 & 2018 and from 2019, Quora supposedly stopped the Top Writer Programme.
Now it runs on Quora Partnership Program (QPP) through which invited members can earn money through posing questions ( Me being a member of QPP earned around 13 dollars though never encashed )
As many of them observed, the content on Quora appears to have watered down ,but I think there is more to it than meets the eye.
One of the primary reasons why many read spam/joke answers on their feed might be due to following those topics that you or following the writers who write mostly their experiences.
We can alter it by changing some settings.
If one does not like the subject of a particular answer in the feed , one can go to that question and see what the topics are (you should be able to see the topics on the question ) , unfollow them ; Simple.
Do the same to all those answers which you think are based on the experiences and conversations.
We cannot blame the Quora just because we see some random conversations and experiences in our feed.
From my experience in Quora for last 6 years, it is a platform where every year, a bunch of fresh writers rise and become active and carve a niche for them.
As a person into tech a lot,
I watch a lot of YouTube and a major part of my hours go to Linus a Tech Tips.
Their forum is a great place for anyone who loves tech!
They have a pretty well defined space for everything to do with tech,
Just like we have several forums for various topics of discussions .
Would recommend to anyone into electronics and generally anything in the near realm.
Not a day goes by before I get my regular fix of..
Team-bhp: Although I am in US currently I am still trying to be in touch with India and things Indian. If the Indian car scene gets montonous you can be assured that shifting gears will always have something to hook you into.
IRFCA: Been a devotee of trains like most of us since childhood. So ever since I discovered the website I had been hooked on to them and the Yahoo groups in earlier avatar.
Reddit: Daily digest of hot topics which is my go to for any pressure relief whenever I am in the hot seat at work or 'The Throne' in the morning.
Quora: My last go to if every thing else fails
Other seasonal forums: airliners.net if any airline travel was coming up..(not travelled even once in 2020) , pprune when something bad happens on airlines, skyscraper city for metro updates
Used to love those mudslinging on the old southern railway forums..:)
I have seen the rise, peak and then the fall from grace of
Quora. I have been a lurker on Quora since its early days around 2011. Actually started writing since 2014 occasionally. Now a days, it's all biased and propagandist and outright trash. So have completely given up on it.
Currently, I scroll
Reddit from time to time and
DriveTribe. I really enjoy the quizzes on DT, some obscure, some just plain stupid fun.
I spend a whole lot of my free time on
Rekhta for some good old Urdu shayari and for some much needed inspiration to write my own.
About a decade ago, IC-CHIP forum was the goto place for the Indian tech scene. Sadly the magazine and the forum shut down.
Desidime is truly addictive, but a smart way to get some good real world appliance reviews and score money saving deals. Some of their 'loot' deals are legit, for eg a cracked Zomato promo code led to quite a few free meals.

bcmtouring.com - It is my first online forum experience as my membership was rejected by Team BHP previous three attempts :D Had it been accepted way back in 2007, Team BHP would have been my first. Anyways, bcmtouring was a really good start for me. Admin, Late Yogesh Sarkar was a very good person. Feels very sad till date about his untimely demise. The travelogues section and road updates specifically on the North India, Leh-Ladakh, Himalayan regions in bcmtouring are by and large the best contents, at par with team-bhp.. |
BCMT till things started going wrong or not to my taste. Had contributed to Travelogue and Photography. Now only check for few specific info only.
Facebook Quora
As a guy who likes all kinds of weird content, I browse reddit regularly.
Used to browse quora, but lost interest recently.
Don't use 4chan that much due to the UI.
Over the years I have accumulated a large number of forums in my favourite folder. Some I visit daily, some occasionally. Most of them are to do with my hobbies and interests.
I am a member of three car clubs and they all have their own dedicated website and forums. They also have an active Facebook presence.
I am a (contributing) member on various Alfa Spider, Mercedes W123 and Jaguar international forums. Mostly American forums. (except for the W123). The Americans tend to be the best car forums for DIY car mechanics. The Americans just love working on their cars. They do amazing things. No job too big or too small for them. Taking an engine out is something so mundane, you would actually need to ask questions on how did you do it, otherwise it would hardly get a mention.
I still follow daily a aviation/simulator forum, I have been a member for probably more than 20 years. I still glance at some other aviation forums, but these days a lot of these forums and overrun with idiots that simply don’t contribute anything.
When it comes to my photography I only look at the various forums/Facebook groups of the Royal Photographic Society. And even that is too much to take it all in.
Recently (see my “fiddling thread”) I have started building my own (working) steam engines. So again, I joined a few forums. The Dutch one is very active and I have been getting a lot of support from various members. In fact I received tools and parts from several of the members, all for free!
I must admit quite a few of my social interaction has moved to Facebook. For some stuff that is quite ok. I still prefer forums really. Facebook is good for simple stuff. Anything requiring a bit more insight/information a forum is a more suitable format I find. Also, Facebook groups often are huge. So you might get dozens, if not hundreds of responses to a single post. Mostly a lot of crap.
On some of my forums I have been for years/decades. I believe that helps, you get to know people, people get to know you. I have met quite a few people through forums, met them in real life and became friends. I am not sure if that ever happened to me on Facebook? I can only think of one guy, Steve.
We sort of accidentally “be-friended” each other on Facebook. We could never figure out who invite who. But one of us did and the other accepted. Turned out we had a lot of common interest. Although we never met, we did have many discussion on many different topics over the years. Like us, Steve and his wife liked travelling and photography. It was a real virtual friendship. He passed away a few months. I got a message from his son notifying me of his dad passing away. A new experience for me, thinking about a passed away virtual friend.

Jalopnik is what it is because of the comments. Readers are the king here and feel free to trash a bs article. Jason's articles are a pleasure to read. They dont limit their subjects to geography, power figures or even purpose:).
The Drive is trying harding to be the ideal Jalopnik replacement but its still far from it.
RCR even though a youtube channel and not a internet forum I dig this guy's narration. His approach to car culture is realistic and humour is of next level.
Spending loads of time on Team BHP going through both new and old threads - there's a motherload of experience here and I'm just trying to soak it in.
In addition Advrider is amazing as well. Gives one (especially Indians I feel) a slightly different perspective of motorcycles and what they mean to different individuals.
Found Shumi's old articles both from his blog as well as his Overdrive days -
http://overdrive.in/author/shubhabrata-marmar_8/ https://rearset.blogspot.com/?m=1
Though technically not a forum, it is worth reading all the articles.
Absolute gold!
Bulletech is the only other forum that I have been a part of for more than a decade (It recently migrated from yahoo groups to groups.io). The only social media account I have is on linkedin, which is strictly professional.
Other than Team-BHP, I used to browse AndroidCentral / WindowCentral for software and electronic gadget-related stuff and
Dreamdth for Indian telecom and DTH-related news.
Once, I was addicted to Quora, but these days, I have lost my interest in it.
Reddit is pretty good. Straight to the point right from headlight bulb types, dog food and all the way up to why PC won't boot with two sticks of ram. Also, no restrictions or political correctness. Most comments can be taken at face value.
I'd suggest staying away from Quora. Extremely biased against men and any political alignment other than left. Moderators are hostile. Besides, the answers on most questions are completely rubbish.
P.S. I was poking around about an upgrade and saw the dumbest answer possible. How can someone be this thick headed? All 7 answers by this person are the same. The question and the answers are like parallel lines.

Only Team-Bhp on a consistent basis, occasional spikes happen with other sites or forums, but none of them have sustained my interest.
