Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

I have beaters in all most all things.

1. Beater walking shoes Adidas at ~1.2 K bought in a sale Vs the more expensive ASICS.

2. Phone Chargers : I buy multiple cheap chargers for use in my car and other assorted areas while I have one company charger which will stand the test of time.

3. Formal Shoes : Bata / Hush Puppies brown loafers to limit exposure of my more expensive Timberlands.

4: clothes : I have shirts and pants from 2006 onwards that serve as my beaters when I don’t want to care about my look. My wife always asks the vintage if I pick some thing up to wear

5: watches : my timex digital Vs the inviuctus automatic. Though more recently I don’t care about the invictus much. Need something smarter

I am sure I will find more as I think about it

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

Interesting thread...

Of all the products I use on a daily basis, a pair of crocs define the word 'beater' in true sense for me. On my second pair yet since last 5 years.
I have literally worn them to all possible places, including to office.

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

Interesting thread! Let's see -

1. Beater shoes? Definitely Yes, I have a pair of almost all kind. My beater formal shoes are the all-weather kind that can be wiped clean with a shining foam. This helps me keep my pure leather ones that are permanently stationed at office, shiny for a longer period. Similarly, I have beater pairs of sneakers and flipflops as well, intended for usage in appropriate setting and to prevent overuse of the more expensive pair.

2. Beater pen? Yes, learned the lesson the hard way, when someone borrowed and then lost one of my prized possessions. Since then, I always have pens in my bag designated for lending

3. Beater tools? Yes, I keep some common tools handy around the house for everyday use and won't be bothered if they are somehow misplaced, while keeping their expensive alternatives stowed away in respectively storage boxes.

I have contemplated having beater phones and laptops too.. But that kind of defeats the purpose of having a good one. So decided against it.

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

For me it is our Suzuki Samurai, the no problem bike. We bought it for 19k, fitted new tyres, engine+2T oil and I have not done anything for 10 years except for the consumables. I used it during my college days and now for my daily work commute. It has never stalled me midway in a trip and always starts in one kick.

No problem.

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

My favorite:
1. Normal (mechanical) pencils as I hate people touch my Pentel/Steadtler.
2. Some beater clothes which I wear everywhere except important professional meetings (work related) or personal (meeting potential members from the other sex :P)
3. Beater caps which I don't care if people lose/forget to return
4. Beater tools which I can lend to anyone
5. Beater slippers for all the dirty cleaning, gardening, and maintenance work around home

One question for members with beater shoes with running: Don't the cheapo shoes hurt while running?

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

I wonder how come people didn’t think about beater cologne/perfume or deodorant.

I use a humble axe (provoke) deodorant when I stay at home, it’s got nice oriental notes to it. And for everyday office I use Zara Man Silver EDT, it’s got wood and musk notes and stays for a day. I save and use my Chrome Azzaro and Ferrari Light Essence Acqua for special occasions.

Here's a list of beater items I use:

1. A pair of Nike sneakers at a great discount from Amazon to save my leather formals and Adidas superstar

2. An 8 year old Guess watch for when I cannot wear my Apple watch

3. Apple wired earpods in place of my Airpods

4. Concentrated perfume oils from Ajmal as a daily wear to save my Versace Eros for special occasions

5. A half face Fastrack helmet in place of my MT helmet

6. I have three spare lightning cables for office, car and one extra at home which I ordered from AliExpress.

Lastly, beater phone cases.

  • Is very service friendly (changed my battery from OP dealer for 1200 bucks)
I was a bit surprised on this Samsung remark.. because I have always had great experience with their devices. I used 1st Note for 4 years+ and all my samsung devices were sold off in great condition & fetched great resale price (average of ~3 years). Most of them are flagships though (Note 4, S7).

This is my beater item, the most inexpensive cure to most problems.

I hit WD-40 at most issues I face - from everyday plumbing to rusted stuff to pest problems, to shineless tiles and basins on toilets. Most of them get resolved by this.

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

My regular things are my beater things, life of a minimalist.
  • All the t-shirts (almost all black or grey)
  • Two Levi’s blue jeans (I shop when there’s an occasion or official events)
  • Puma slip on shoes (which I change every 6 months)
  • Casio G-Shock to save the Edifice for occasions, but replaced by a Fitbit Versa as a beater long time ago

This is what comes to my mind when I hear the word “beater”:

Samsung was my go-to brand before I tried Oneplus. Samsung phones require atleast one visit to the service center every two years. Also with time they always become slower.

Try the Oneplus and you will see the difference of day and night between the two phones. Ofcourse the cameras in OP are nowhere close to Samsung.

I have a OP1 in perfect condition, OP3 and a OP3T. Imagine having a 2014 samsung running phone today. No battery swelling, no slowing down, not a single visit to service center.

Basically, if Samsung is Maruti, OP is Toyota

Re: Beater everyday items and gear just like beater cars

Great thread…!

Beater everyday items – obviously have a few cheap and cheerful t-shirts and shorts from Zara/H&M or a couple of Levi’s which works for almost every informal occasions.
Other than those, the always go-to kind of items are:
  • The super comfortable Onitsuka Tiger shoes
  • A Titan watch - I got that seeing an advertisement featuring some Malayalam movie stars
  • Completely beaten up Mont Blanc wallet (10+ years)
  • The reliable and robust iPhone 11 Pro
