Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam no more :(

Legendary singer Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam breathed his last at MGM hospital in Chennai. It's a huge loss to the music world. With A Guinness record for singing over 40,000 Songs in his lifetime (in 16 languages!!!) he was a favorite among music lovers. After more than a month of hospitalisation due to Covd-19, he finally left us today!

His songs was always my favorite and will continue to be so! He'll be missed but his songs will never be forgotten!

Not just a singer, but he was a dubbing artist, actor, music director, anchor. A real Gem- one of the many that Covid-19 has taken away from us :(

Very sad indeed. Undoubtedly and arguably India's best playback singer. Simply class apart. More than 40K songs in a career is simply no small feat. Could have gone to sing a few thousand more definitely. Was a great actor too. Rest in peace sir.

re: Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam no more :(

The only song which comes to my mind when I think of SPB is "Noorondu nenapu" from the legendary Kannada movie "Bandhana". I can listen to the same song in infinite loop and never get bored of it.

Extremely sad news to hear that the legend is no more.

May the departed soul attain moksha. Om shanti.

re: Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam no more :(

He, in my view, is the most versatile singer India has ever seen; and an excellent human being.

He used to modulate his voice so well to make it sound a little different for all the stars for whom he was playing back on screen eg..Kamal Hassan, Rajnikanth, Mohan, Sivakumar etc.

This peppy number, sung by Dr. SPB in Tamil, is from the early 80s; just listen in when possible using headphones and appreciate the variation he has brought in.

and then, the following is another rendition of his in 1994, reproduced at a reality show sometime late last year (I think).

Your voice is evergreen, Sir.

Stay happy, wherever you are !!

RIP S.P.B. Sir. Indian Cine Music has lost a great asset. A Singer, Actor, Producer and a dubbing artist. Nothing can replace this loss.

Eligible for Bharat Ratna, if at all can be given posthumously

re: Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam no more :(

This is great loss to Indian music. I became his big fan listening to the cassette tape of the movie Sankarabharanam 40 years ago, it was the only tape we owned for over a year.

It was a marvel that a regular playback singer could sing for a movie based on Carnatic classical music. The great singer Bala Murali Krishna said it couldn't be done by playback singers. But SPB showed it could be done.

He had the unique talent of matching his voice to the person acting in the movie.

Let me leave you all with this...

Edit: Changed to a pure classical composition

The loss feels so personal, since the legend was part of my growing up years through his songs.
The world just got a whole lot poorer today.

Absolutely gutted.

Bad news indeed. He surely would have gone on to sing a few more. I grew up listening to him. I drive listening to him. His voice shall remain.

Thank you SPB garu for making my childhood a bit more brighter, if not for you it would have been very very dark. The mellifluous voice is unmatched, the only other singer who people loved more may be Mohammed Rafi!

The most versatile singer for me. Rafisaab is greater (even for SPB he was). But having opportunity to sing in all southern movies made him without parallel in terms of variety.

He leaves us but his songs can never. They will be part of us everyday. Only that we wouldn't be able to hear him talking about past memories.

May His Soul Rest in Peace!

How Ironic!!! The person with tremendous lung capacity passes away due to breathing difficulties!!
