Dismantling an OHC's dashboard!!

Well for all those of you who went through the Delhi Meet thread, you would know that Mr. Sam very kindly dropped my phone through the A/C vent, right into the bottom of the blower ducting!! Can't blame the poor fellow though, we had been drinking & the A/C grille was missing!

Anyways next day I had to have the phone retrieved for which we needed to take apart the whole dash. Here is a pictorial of the same:

It fell through the left vent which was without a grille, the right one was removed later to take the whole dash out.

The inside view

Taking off the steering wheel

Steering off

Plastic cover off

Gearknob off, taking out the console

Taking out the whole Stalk assembly

Central console being loosened

Taking out the Stereo

Mounting sleeve off

More pictures to follow....

Ragman,

It brings tears to the eyes to see an automobile being dismantled - even in part. Hope your OHC regained her pride after the reassembly!

Curiously, what shenanigans were you upto in the first place without the AC vents ?

That was a big price you are paying for not replacing those grills, ishan. i had to do this in my esteem too since the AC ducts got blocked. But nothing to it really, just make sure all the screws are put back & tightened to prevent any rattling from there.
cheers

the phone was in the vent. Must be fun when someone calls and the phone vibrating inside. hehehe.

I can just picture it Sam talking on the phone and casually putting it in the vent, saying to himself, so cool OHC has a dedicated slot for keeping the mobile.

Yeah she's fine! As for the vent well one of the plastic locks broke so couldn't fit it back hence it was lying in the glovebox. Never thought that someone would think that the cavity from which there is cold air coming is a cubby hole for a mobile phone.

Agreed John but again I didn't in my wildest dreams think someone would actually put a phone there.

Yeah it was pretty funny & pretty irritating at the same time!

Well you know the worst part, before putting in my phone Sam had put in his own phone in the same vent but since his ohone is much thinner is got stopped by the raised border at the rear of the vent. Now, when he put in my phone there was no raised border & it slid right down to the bottom of the ducting!! I'm just thinking how funny it would have been if Sam's phone had gone down the ducting instead of mine!!!

No other way possible, had to remove the whole dashboard. It's an E50.

Oops that must have been a time consuming one. Was there lost of dust inside, I wonder if it makes sense to open the dash every couple of years and give it cleanse job (for my car). It does not seem to cost much, have you to taken the opportunity to get any rattles fixed.
