Re: A Guide: Eating out in Delhi/NCR

The food mecca has moved to Gurugram. Starting with high end eateries (incl those in the Cyber Hub), there are places for all palettes and pockets. The sheer competition makes them pull up their socks. One thing we tend to forget is 'pub type' food in various micro-breweries. Almost every second or third mall has one of these.

If South Delhi's an option, All American Diner at Habitat Centre opens at 7.

Depends on what you want and where you are.

Most of the joints serving South Indian food open quite early, and there are hotel coffee shops which are open 24x7.

Re: What are some iconic restaurants/eateries in your city?

Top of my mind in Delhi:

- Wengers in CP: best mutton patties in the world, among other delicacies. 100+ year old shop.

- Sitaram Diwanchand, Paharganj: Chhole Bhature of a particular style (pre cooked bhaturas)

- Moti Mahal, Daryaganj: Inventor of the butter chicken apparently.

- Rajender da dhaba, Safdarjung Enclave for chicken curry and kebabs

... and then there are places like Karims, Bukhara etc
--------------

Some people will call the Paranthe Wali gali restaurants iconic - but they are absolutely horrible

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Delhi/NCR

I would add

1. Wengers (CP) - Cream Roll and Chocolate eclair. Rarely do you get fresh cream now a days.
2. Nagpal Chole Bhature (Amar Colony) - some of the best fresh Chole and Bhature in South Delhi.
3. Karim's in Islamic Centre (near IHC) - Much better and more consistent than the Jama Masjit joint. Further you get air conditioned seating at reasonable price.

If you are adventurous type them take a metro to Zakir Nagar for fabulous non vegetarian street food, as good as Jama Masjit

Begum's in New Ashok Nagar.
This place has opened up near where I used to stay, and their biryani and changezi is quite good.
Not a visit and sit down kind of place, more of carry away. Picked up some frozen stuff too and the shammis are pretty good for snacks.
Can be found on google maps near new ashok nagar metro station

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Delhi/NCR

If anyone is looking for authentic south India delicacies - mainly Masala Dosa/Utthapam/Vadai/Idli Sambar, head straight to a small joint named "Mathew's Cafe" at Tamil Sangam marg, RK Puram.

The small joint dishes out scrumptious and authentic south Indian dishes. It is a huge hit among office goers in vicinity and the Sambar tastes out of this world. You will forget the likes of Sagar Ratna/Sarvanna Bhavan after tasting from this small cafe.

100% agree with you on the Parathe Wali Gali. As a non Delhi resident & tourist went to the place and came out dazed. Food was horrible, could not figure out quite what the hype was about, I though maybe I missed something or my taste quite not up to the Delhi standards.
Seems this place has lost its glory days & survives on yesteryear legacy - as depicted on the photographs on the wall too - Indira Gandhi, Zail Singh etc. patronizing the shops there.

Me too. Found it disgusting the way they deep fry those parathas. Yeewww!

Aaloo chat at the cart outside is much relief if you venture there.

And.. has nobody mentioned Qureshi kebab center at jama masjid? It's a crazy place where you have to wait for anywhere between 5-20 minutes for an order. Absolutely mouth watering sheekh kebabs swimming in butter for a very reasonable price. ₹30 for beef and ₹40 for chicken. ₹5 for rumali.

Note: There are many impostor joints. Make sure you have the right one. See pic for reference.

Oh yeah I remember. RK Puram aiyappa temple visits never used to be complete without a visit to this joint!

On chole Batures, I Don't remember the exact place, but we used to rave about a joint in Patel nagar near Satyam back in the late 90s. The chole bature used to be out of the world!

For Chole Bhature I visit Nagpal in Sant Nagar (a kilometre behind LSR, near the furniture market)
