Mukesh Ambanis New House. Insane display of Wealth or sign of India's prosperity?

House with a Price Tag of Rs.4000 crore for 6 people and 600 staff

Mukesh Ambani's new residence - a 27-storey glass-fronted building will have parking for 168 cars, three helipads, a theatre and 600 staffers for its upkeep. Mukesh Ambani's new residence being constructed in Mumbai's Altamount Road is the stuff myths are made of. Named after the mythical island Antilia, the house-in-the-making will be completed by next year. It is being built on a 4,532 sq metre plot that was acquired by Ambani in 2002.

27 FLOORS:

According to the plan, the house will rise to a height of 173.12 meters, equivalent to that of a regular 60-storeyed residential building . However, Antilia will have only 27 storeys in all.

SIX FLOORS FOR PARKING :

The first six floors will be reserved for parking alone, and that too for cars belonging only to Mukesh's family. Space for a total of 168 imported cars has been earmarked here.

ENTERTAINMENT FLOOR:

The eighth floor will have an entertainment centre comprising a mini-theatre .

BALCONIES WITH GARDENS :

The rooftop of the mini-theatre will serve as a garden, and immediately above that, three more balconies with terrace gardens.

THE HEALTH FLOORS:

While the ninth floor will have a 'refuge' floor - meant to be used for rescue in emergencies - two floors above that will be set aside for health. It will have facilities for athletics and a swimming pool, while the other will have a health club.

FOR GUESTS:

There will be a two-storeyed glass-fronted apartment for the Ambani family's guests above the health floors.

FAMILY:

The four floors at the top, that will provide a view of the Arabian Sea and a superb view of the city's skyline, will be for Mukesh, his wife Neeta, their three kids and Mukesh's mother Kokilaben .

AIR SPACE FLOOR:

Two floors above the family's residence will be set aside as maintenance areas, and on top of that will be an 'air space floor,' which will act as a control room for helicopters landing on the helipad above. There will be three helipads there.

STAFF:

Nearly 600 staffers are expected to work in the building.

P.S. Just curious, what friend Lakshmi Mittal will buy next besides his £300 million yatch which is due for delivery in 2008 if rumours are to be believed !

Cheers ~

Hmmm... surprising that you posted it. A few days back I and my father was talking about the same. Then again just 2 days back (when the article appeared in TOI here) it was a topic of intense debate amongst friends. Goes to prove that people in general are uncomfortable with this kind brazen display of wealth.

I think Mittal also owns a huge palatial mansion (the kind britain has by the dozens). However in India this kind of things only add fuel to the fire. No wonder a few days back Manmohan Singh was critical of the CEOs and their humongous salaries which cause unrest amongst the masses. At that time it sounded very socialistic and CII immediately rejected the idea. He probably said a few things without putting them in word.

A 60 story high building (albeit with only 27 stories built) for a family of 6 and a retinue of servants sounds almost obscene. Moreover where is all this money coming in from? On the face of it its Mr. Ambani's wealth that is being put in. However a thorough audit may very well reveal that Reliance is putting in a good part of the money for its top dog's residence. No doubt they will show a lot of reasons to justify the action. All companies do so when their CEOs decide to bestow themselves with windfalls. Only that the money actually belongs to the public in general. Ambanis may have started the group and are its biggest shareholder but the fact remains that in a public limited company the owner does not remain an owner in truth. I do not think they should be spending such opulent sums of money on something so frivolous. I say this 'cause you can bet your last penny on the fact that the whole of 4000 crores is not coming in Mr. Ambani's pocket.

You may not find 22 staff members on each floor. Rather some floors will have a lot of them. Like the basements, ground etc. A building of such proportions is like a running organization. There will be maintenance, kitchen etc... These are the floors where you will find hordes of them.

By the way, thise helipad on the top floor is not yet confirmed IMO. The government is yet to give its consent for a helipad at the top of the building. But then knowing Mr. Ambani I won't at all be surprised if it just happens in a snap

As our PM said the other day, (not pointing to this news) such blatant display of wealth will lead to social unrest.

I would call bullshiit on the PMs words. He should think of all his colleagues who make billions illegally. Mukesh Ambani works harder than any bunch of politicians together, and it is unfair to grudge him his wealth.

Hope Mr. Prime Minister is aware of this. Minister in his cabinet is spending Rs 1L /Sqft and he asking teh CEOs to take a cut, for contributing to 9% GDP growth, for which he, his government and his party taking credit.

It's Ambani's money. If he likes it this way, very good.
Personally, I hate it. Looks bloody ugly. If I had money, something like Kingfisher Villa, Sinquerim would be the way I'd go. A sprawling bunglow by the beach, with a huge garden, a shady driveway, dogs, lots of beer, lots of cars, my family and friends.....
If, if, if, if,..... if wishes were horses, beggers would ride!

And mukesh works very hard for his 'white' money, right ?

Absolutely agree. This multi storey concept inside the city reeks of bad taste of the people with new money.

I don't know about you, but I have had the privilege of interacting with some people who work by him. He works harder than any of them, and is known to put in 16 hour workdays. He is lucky to have inherited a lot of money, but popular opinion is even if he hadn't, he'd still be very successful. Reliance's business ethics may be questionable, but then again, no one is lilly-white.

I don't find the building ugly. As far as crowded cities go, the only way to have a lot of space is to build upwards.

IMO the building is pretty awesome but a bit too much. Id much rather have something with a little more charm. Something like SRK's Mannat (without the building behind it).

The fact that we are even talking about something like this is evidence of our hypocrisy as a society. Everyone in our country wants to make it to the top, and when someone else does, and builds a magnificent house or buys expensive cars, people want to bitch about it? And want to debate on HOW he made his money? Get a life, people.
