Amazing posts! wealth of information, thanks Harrie for starting this thread and Sam for loading it with info. I am a Wildlife enthusiast but yet to venture into any safaris outside our commercialised nagarhole and others yet...great post

I thin giraffes are great too. Just I've never been able to see eye-to-eye with one!

Hi,Its a nice threat.Iam driving all alone this weekend through bandipur and madumalai wildlife santury.its good that i got lot of inputs to drive through a forest.

Nope. It's a culture thing. And we don't respect animals.

It's a culture thingie!
We can see it very much not just with Animals, in every aspect in different parts of India. How people treat people differs too, it sure is a culture thing, it comes through blood, it is passed on, education will not just eradicate it in one generation.

So people do not look to marry from your caste/creed/relegion! get over it, marry whom you love, and this will change the whole world around us!

LOVE - is the key, love and marry and the kid will be all with new culture and love for this world and Nature! please!

Just some info what i gathered from my uncle who is a ranger

Elephants : Avoid lone elephants and elephants with newborns. Always be downwind since elephants have keen sense of smell, they have poor eyesights comparitively. If at all chased by elephant dont try to go uphill, the elephant will outrun u easily but when it comes to chasing downhill, owing to their bulk they are relatively slower. When on flat stretches go zig zag amongst trees and its believed that the elephants give up the chase pretty soon unless the elephant is in must. While confronted by elephant when u are in a vehicle (if its an open top, then god save u), the safest thing u can do is keep the engine in idle, do not honk, dont make any major movements, roll up the windows, and if they still attack then try to get as close as to the floor as possible and pray like u never knew god before.

Bears(sloth), I dont know if its true but i believe , these creatures are pretty qurious and playful characters , so chose a long twig and point it ahead of them and they try to catch them between their big claws . Back slowly to open stretch slowly doing so and then scoot like a grizzly is behind you. Or else just lie flat face down but make sure to cover ur neck with ur hands. Since these sloth are very much smaller than the other cousins like the grizzlies, then dont tend to persist an attack at prey bigger than them

Bisons , they are shy by nature and will attack only when they are on the lookout for companions.. There is no absolute trick for these guys since they can outrun u on any terrain. The safest bet is climb a tree and hang in there.

Wild boars, these are the scary guys and the best thing is not to get any where close to them, their elongated tooth can do some real damage.

As were the deer, they don't even know which way is up!

I dont know about the deer, but Elephants booze a lot.

They know which tree has which fruit has fermented that gets them tipsy. There are also many stories of the elephants coming into camps and stealing liquor.

I think you can faintly make out a peacock (or is it a peahen?) in the 2nd photo.

I guess you meant 'musth". And given that musth in elephants is a state of sexual aggression, i would assume that they would chase cow elephants, rather than human beings.

Elephants have a keen sense of smell. If one is boozed, elephants will pick up the smell pretty easy and they don't like it. I've seen domesticated (if they ever are) elephants behave very differently with people who are drunk.

Just recently read a report that a person was mauled to death by a lion when a group of 4 youths had gone to 'watch' a group of lions who were trying to seduce a lioness. One of the lions was mating when the other jumped on these youths and dragged one of them in the bushes.

What Sam said was quite true - never disturb lions (or for that matter any creature) when they are mating.

Apparently, these guys had gone to the Gir jungles on bikes!
