House of Ninjas

Streaming: Netflix

Finished watching this web series, I am big fan of the Ninja movies. The series has some good ninja fights but some episodes are slow due to love angle thrown in. The series is Japanese with English subtitles.

"True Detectives" Season 4 on HBO.

Rating - trash/5

Short review? Avoid. Long review? Avoid at any cost.

I can't get my 5-6 hours back but if you haven't watched it then just skip it.

It's a travesty of how this series started (season 1 is 5/5, others are mixed bag). The supposed detectives in this season indulge in such idiotic antics I was shaking my head in disbelief by the end of finale. Gotta watch S01 to wash off the bad taste.

LOL! I meant EP 4.

Completed all 6-episodes and my rating stands. It's an excellent thriller and worth the watch.

The way it ended, looks like there will be another season.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Finished seeing billions from S1 to S7
In short, billions was good until season 5, season 6 was average and season 7 was a not-so-good send-off. I liked the rivalry between Axe and Chuck. The show was getting lame at some points but overall, it was an entertaining show with "too many" pop culture references.

Godless: (2017, Netflix)

"In the 1880s American West, murderous outlaw gang leader Frank Griffin hunts for ex-protege Roy Goode. Frank's chase leads him to La Belle, New Mexico--a town inhabited, after a mining disaster, almost entirely by women."

As a western genre fan, this series ticked all the checkboxes.

Just thankful it was a mini series and not crushed into a movie.

Poachers

Streaming: Prime

Finished watching this web series, I am big fan of police procedurals and this is as taut as they come. And very real. Very very good acting! Loved how they have kept Malayalam + Hindi + English. Makes it seem so real. Must watch!

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Finally got around to watching Depp v Heard on Netflix.

Had not followed the trial and the hoopla around it last year; so this was quite enlightening.

IMHO, the way the whole thing became a social media spectacle was quite appalling.

The documentary has perfectly captured the essence of the madness.

Poachers
on Prime

There are 8 episodes in this first season. The overall theme is quite good and handled well. The acting is decent and it does not bore you.

But there is a lot of CGI that adds very little to the story. Especially the shots of the animals just before a scene starts.
Found them just a waste of money for the production team.

The last 2 episodes felt very stupid. The entire airport sequence was nonsensical and the confession / interrogation sequences were nonsensical.

The raid in Delhi and the mob sequence added nothing to the original story and I have no idea why they invested so much time into that.

Same with the illness of the head officer.

This would have been a much nicer series if they stuck to the main story instead of trying to have these side stories that add nothing to the narattive.

Probably late to the party but -

"The Beef" on Netflix
4.5/5

Its a mini-series about the a simple road rage incident spiraling into events with serious consequences. The premise didn't sound too promising to me at first but boy within ep1 I was hooked. After that it was binge watch this last weekend.

Incredible performances by the cast but I especially loved the actress who plays one of the main roles. This series has everything, humor/witty dialogues, drama, some action and heart warming moments. Its been a minute since I watched something different. Loved it.

Possibly not available on Netflix India. It's available here and it's an amazing series.

Slow Horses (Season 2)
OTT : Apple TV+
5/5

It took me a while to get to S2 after getting totally bowled over by S1.

I can never get tired of watching Gary Oldman on the screen with his disgusting eating, smoking and drinking habits and best part is the insults that he doles out in abundance to his employees. ... It just cracks me up like nothing in a long time.

Like any other classic BBC show and possible fans of Le Carré adaptations, it’s a superb piece of ensemble acting. Gary Oldman is at the top of his game as Jackson Lamb and possibly the best acting I have seen in a very long time.

I thought Slow Horses S1 was fantastic but, S2 out did it for me. I’m reveling in this amazing show and want to extend the juicy content for as long as possible so I am going to watch S3, episode by episode in near future.

Not to take away the credit for the dialogues which I feel is the backbone of this outstanding show apart from the fabulous characters and acting.

Can’t wait to start Season 3.

Yes, it is the first time he’s come on camera since DDLJ. He is notoriously reclusive and absolutely refuses interviews. You only see him in Yashraj or maybe if you’re lucky, at some film theatre where he sometimes quietly comes to catch a movie. He pretty much eats, sleeps, lives movies, not interested in any promotions.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

I'm surprised this hasn't made an entry here, given how most people are posting this on their social media pages. A lot of men complaining how their wives/significant other got them to watch it, and they're now hooked to it more than them!

One Day, on Netflix.

It is one of those series, that are slow and easy, without a lot of things happening, but those that draw you in so fast and so quick, that you end up binge-watching it.

It's hard to explain what this series is, because on the face of it, it just follows the lives of two young people over the course of years, with a few anecdotes for every year.

But damn, it pulls you in.
