re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

Really sad incident :(

Was seeing a few visuals that were showing a bunch of people purposefully shaking the bridge and some of them were even kicking at the suspension joints!!!

Overloaded bridge and apparently lack of fitness?

Just sad stuff overall :(

re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

Very sad news indeed!

Firstly I was surprised to see that much crowd, & I was actually shocked to see in the videos that youngsters kicking and pulling the cables, swaying the bridge as if they wanted something to happen and it happened whatever the reason was. I don't think even in such overcrowding, a bridge could collapse owing to all factor of safeties in design. Sad incident indeed. Our people seem to learn nothing from such incidents.

re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

Authorities are going to register FIR against the Company responsible for repair as completion certificate was not sought and obtained. Then how did the same authorities allow public to utilize the bridge.
Was the bridge designed for so much load and that too idiots kicking the suspension cables and check the sway of the bridge ?

re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

Hanging bridges sway even under normal conditions. People jumping on it or kicking it has to be taken into design considerations. These cannot be any excuse for it to collapse.

I read somewhere it was redesigned from the existing British era bridge. If that is so, then it the combination of poor redesign, poor quality materials used combined with poor workmanship that caused the collapse.
Not to speak of probably hurried work to show off for the upcoming elections.

All these factors are important and need to be investigated, but alas they will investigate themselves and find some poor scapegoat.

Purposely not sharing images of the current situation but a look at the condition of the bridge in it's earlier condition does not give a lot of confidence at all. I would be really cautious to even tread on this bridge when alone; leave aside when there are some 150 folks using it along with me. Plus the water looks deep and the river is extremely wide.

The more than a century-old bridge (popularly called the jhoolta pool), built over the Machchhu river was reopened for the public just four days back after seven months of repair work by a private firm. However, an official said that the bridge had not received the municipality's "fitness certificate".
It looks like this bridge was over 100 years old! And now they want to file FIR against the company

re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

It's a 143 year old British era bridge, renovations to it must have been purely cosmetic, it's highly unlikely that they changed components such as suspender, anchor or main cables. The private company(likely owned by some local babu) that acquired it's operations contract is entirely at fault here. Also from what I have read, it was merely a tourist attraction and did not have any functional purpose except leisure, you just cannot expect it to uphold to modern architectural standards, doing so would be utterly foolish.

What they did has not only resulted in loss of precious life but also destroyed a heritage structure. I hope the perpetrators receive the maximum possible sentence.

Its a collapse without any warning.

This is such a horrible video. Feel very bad for this completely avoidable loss of life.

At least one sane visitor saw what's happening and returned home with his family. On the overloading part - the numbers quoted by him tells the story. Also, as Amrik quoted, FIR is filed as per below sections.

Quote:
Goswami said he had also alerted the bridge staff about the dangerous actions, “but they were indifferent.” Furthermore, the bridge was overloaded. While the bridge held a capacity for 150-200 people, at least 600 tickets had been issued yesterday, as per sources.Government officials also alleged that the bridge, renovated by private group Oreva, had not been given a “fitness certificate” by civic authorities before it opened.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said that the state government has formed a committee to probe the collapse. An FIR was also lodged in the bridge collapse under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (intentional act causing death) and 114 (abettor present when offence committed), against whoever is found responsible, Sanghavi said.

This is like saying I crashed my car because my child in the back seat kicked the door!

What a tragic and completely, 100% avoidable, incident. This bridge was standing for 100+ years and it collapsed 4 days after the renovation was complete. I see only one party responsible for this mass death event.

Re: Morbi Bridge collapse in Gujarat

Looking at the old pictures of Morbi bridge, do you think this type of bridge can sustain the weight of 134 victims + the lucky ones ?
Whichever organisation repairs this bridge, it cannot add to the load bearing capacity of it to this magnitude.
